Understanding feedback relationships between resources, functionings and well-being: A case study of seaweed farming and artisanal processing in Indonesia

Silva Larson et al.

Summary: By interviewing 74 women from seaweed farming villages in Indonesia, it was found that distinct capabilities are required for farming and processing, with observed feedback loops indicating that the importance of resources can vary in different contexts, affecting levels of wellbeing.

Habitat value of bivalve shellfish and seaweed aquaculture for fish and invertebrates: Pathways, synthesis and next steps

Seth J. Theuerkauf et al.

Summary: Aquaculture can negatively impact coastal ecosystems but can also provide valuable ecosystem goods and services, including increasing the abundance and species richness of wild, mobile macrofauna. The cultivation of bivalve shellfish and seaweed can positively influence the structure and function of faunal communities through various mechanisms such as providing structured habitat and food resources.

Knowledge gaps and management recommendations for future paths of sustainable seaweed farming in the Western Indian Ocean

Maria Eggertsen et al.

Summary: Farming of eucheumatoid seaweeds is a significant livelihood option in tropical coastal areas, with generally low environmental impact but potential introduction of alien species and alterations of local environment. Despite decades of practice, knowledge on the environmental impacts of farming non-native eucheumatoid haplotypes remains limited.

Women's well-being and household benefits from seaweed farming in Indonesia

Silva Larson et al.

Summary: Seaweed farming in Indonesia has positive economic and social impacts on communities in South Sulawesi, leading to increased household income and life satisfaction; the industry helps to improve key well-being factors such as transportation, housing, basic needs, other needs, and education; the dominance of smallholders in Indonesia's seaweed industry highlights the importance of considering potential negative impacts of transitioning from small-scale to large-scale enterprises in future development efforts.

Vitamin C from Seaweed: A Review Assessing Seaweed as Contributor to Daily Intake

Cecilie Wirenfeldt Nielsen et al.

Summary: The vitamin C content in seaweeds varies among different species, but overall there are no significant differences observed; seaweeds can contribute to daily intake of vitamin C but are not a rich source of this nutrient; seasonal variations, analytical methods, and processing all impact the vitamin C content in seaweeds.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Effects of a seaweed feed inclusion on different life stages of the mottled rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens

Valentin Thepot et al.

Summary: The study assessed the dietary effects of red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis on the growth, innate immune response, and sexual maturation of captive-bred rabbitfish, Siganus fuscescens. Results showed that feeding the seaweed could increase the growth rate and feed conversion ratio of fish, while reducing potentially pathogenic microbial abundance. Additionally, seaweed diets could improve the proportion of adult fish and their innate immune response.

Seaweed dietary supplements enhance the innate immune response of the mottled rabbitfish, Siganus fuscescens

Valentin Thepot et al.

Summary: This study found that dietary seaweed supplements can enhance the immune response of S. fuscescens, with red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis and brown seaweed Dictyota intermedia showing the most promising results. Further research on these species is recommended.

Seaweed farming collapse and fast changing socio-ecosystems exacerbated by tourism and natural hazards in Indonesia: A view from space and from the households of Nusa Lembongan island.

Serge Andrefouet et al.

Summary: In recent years, seaweed farming has collapsed dramatically in Nusa Lembongan, Bali, Indonesia, severely impacting the livelihoods of local farmers. Reasons identified from farmers include declining yields, falling prices, coastal development encroaching on seaweed drying space, and alternative jobs provided by the tourism industry. Furthermore, the rapid changes in Indonesia's coastal socio-ecosystem are largely attributed to tourism development and natural hazards.

Growth and product quality of the seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii from different farming locations in Indonesia

Nova Francisca Simatupang et al.

Summary: Indonesia is the largest producer of carrageenophyte seaweeds, with substantial seasonal and regional variation in production and product quality of farmed K. alvarezii. Evaluation of K. alvarezii cultured at 10 different geographic locations in Indonesia showed highly variable production and product quality data. These results can help select and evaluate better-performing K. alvarezii cultivars to improve seaweed farming productivity in Indonesia.

Agus Heri Purnomo et al.

Summary: The research identified inefficiencies in several nodes in the business lines of intermediate farmers and traders, including moisture content differences, productivity rates, and product quality issues. Simple interventions were proposed to address these problems, such as improving cultivation embankments and optimizing cultivation spacing.

Monitoring the COVID-19-affected Indonesian seaweed industry using remote sensing data

Alexandra Langford et al.

Summary: The seaweed industry in Indonesia has grown rapidly over the past twenty years, benefiting 267,000 coastal households. Accurate information is needed for policy makers to improve smallholder livelihoods without further straining natural resources. Utilizing satellite data and other factors, this paper provides insights on the industry's seasonality and changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, evaluating the data's usefulness for monitoring and informing strategic policy decisions.
