Deploying 3D scanning based geometric digital twins during fabrication and assembly in offsite manufacturing

Christopher Rausch et al.

Summary: This article develops a framework for deploying and comparing three distinct geometric digital twin (gDT) approaches in offsite manufacturing. The study finds that scan-vs-BIM is the most accurate approach, parametric BIM updating produces the most semantically rich gDT, and scan-to-BIM strikes a balance between representational accuracy and semantic enrichment. Future research should focus on developing a hybrid solution of these gDT approaches.

Multi-objective Billiards-Inspired Optimization Algorithm for Construction Management Problems

M. Rastegar Moghaddam et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an efficient multi-objective algorithm inspired by billiards, which utilizes physical background of ball collision as its main genesis. The algorithm employs an external repository, maximin strategy, and a roulette-wheel selection mechanism for handling multi-objective problems. Experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm performs well in various mathematical benchmark functions and construction project management problems.

Exploring the potential effectiveness of dynamic and static emergency exit signage in complex spaces through simulation

Lazaros Filippidis et al.

Summary: Emergency exit signs in buildings aid occupant wayfinding during emergencies. The novel ADSS design incorporates flashing green LED lights to attract attention more effectively than traditional signs. Research indicates that ADSS can reduce evacuation time and congestion compared to conventional signage.

Causes of Defects Associated with Tolerances in Construction: A Case Study

Saeed Talebi et al.

Summary: Defects associated with dimensional and geometric variations (tolerance issues) are costly and recurring in construction projects, with a lack of identification and mitigation of causes in the construction industry. This research aims to identify potential causes of tolerance issues through literature review and empirical studies, providing insight for effective solutions in tolerance management. The study reveals limitations of prior research, verifies and refines causes from literature, and investigates reasons behind the recurrence of tolerance issues in the industry, contributing to the development of solutions for tolerance management.

Summary: This paper developed a multi-method simulation (MMS) approach to evaluate the effectiveness of an evacuation plan in disaster management, showing over-utilization and imbalanced load among shelters. It emphasizes the necessity to include evacuation decision-making (social dimension) and adopt sustainable performance indicators in planning the evacuation sustainably.

A multi-criteria optimization study for locating industrial warehouses with the integration of BIM and GIS data

Mehdi Asgari Siahboomy et al.

Summary: The integration of GIS and BIM offers several advantages, including optimal location visualization. This study proposes a useful model for warehouse location in large manufacturing factories using a BIM-GIS integrated model. Economic-social and crisis management criteria were found to have the highest weights in selecting the optimum location for warehouse construction.

BIM-ABM simulation for emergency evacuation from conference hall, considering gender segregation and architectural design

Keivan Bina et al.

Summary: Human behavior simulation in emergency evacuation was carried out using BIM software with an agent-based modeling approach, simulating the evacuation of a conference hall with 177 delegates. The study found that placing symmetrical exit doors on both sides of the hall resulted in the most efficient and fastest evacuation pattern, with a critical evacuation time of 0.4-0.6 min.
