Scenario Analysis for Selecting Sewage Sludge-to-Energy/Matter Recovery Processes

Francesco Facchini et al.

Summary: Sewage sludges, byproducts of wastewater treatment, are now seen as a resource in a sustainable circular economy approach. The sewage sludge treatment system consists of five main phases, with each process characterized by its ability to recover energy and/or matter. A scenario analysis helps identify the best sewage sludge treatment methods to meet technological and economic constraints for potential recovery of matter and energy.

Polyphenolic extracts from pomegranate and watermelon wastes as substrate to fabricate sustainable silver nanoparticles with larvicidal effect against Spodoptera littoralis

Ahmed M. Saad et al.

Summary: This study utilized polyphenol-rich agricultural waste extracts for silver nanoparticles synthesis and evaluated their larvicidal activity against different instars of Spodoptera littoralis. The results showed that silver nanoparticles with increased polyphenol content exhibited enhanced antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, with PPAgNPs being most effective against first instar larvae.

Biochemical and Functional Characterization of Kidney Bean Protein Alcalase-Hydrolysates and Their Preservative Action on Stored Chicken Meat

Ahmed M. Saad et al.

Summary: A new preservation approach using kidney bean protein hydrolysate coating is presented to enhance the quality and prolong the lifetime of raw chicken meat at 4 degrees C. The hydrolysates showed antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, significantly reducing lipid oxidation and bacterial load during cold storage, as well as maintaining meat color, odor, and juiciness. Overall, the kidney bean protein hydrolysates have potential for application in novel foods.

Methane production enhancement of a family-scale biogas digester using cattle manure and corn stover under cold climates

W. E. Abd Allah et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that co-digestion of cattle manure and milled corn stover significantly increased the methane yield and performance of a family-scale biogas digester compared to anaerobic mono-digestion. The use of co-digestion resulted in higher daily, cumulative, and specific methane yields, as well as increased biogas energy production, under winter conditions.
