This study experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of integrating PSL-based optical storage and optical operation on Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+, showing its suitability for optical storage. It also found that Boolean logic operations, binary operations, and matrix multiplications can be performed based on PSL, solving complex problems.
Optical storage based on photostimulated luminescence (PSL) shows significant advantages and is considered one of the most promising next-generation advanced storage technologies. However, to realize PSL-based optical computing, further implementation of PSL-based optical operation is still required. In this work, for the first time we experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of integrating PSL-based optical storage and optical operation on a typical PSL medium: Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+. According to the investigation of its PSL-based writing, reading, storage and clearing properties, Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ is shown to be an excellent PSL medium for optical storage. Significantly, it demonstrates that Boolean logic operations, binary operations, and matrix multiplications can be optically performed based on PSL. Accordingly, two typical examples are presented to show how to solve complicated problems by PSL-based optical operation. One is to determine whether a candidate pet meets the requirements of customers, and the other is to determine the attribution of a selected pattern through an artificial neural network.
