Biofabricating murine and human myo-substitutes for rapid volumetric muscle loss restoration

Marco Costantini et al.

Summary: This study proposes a biofabrication approach to restore skeletal muscle mass, tissue structure, and functionality rapidly, efficiently guiding cell differentiation and myobundle formation by replicating muscle anisotropic organization. Upon implantation, the biofabricated muscle substitutes support the formation of new blood vessels and neuromuscular junctions, contributing to muscle mass and force recovery. These findings provide a strong basis for further testing in large animal models and potential translation into clinical settings.

Manufacturing of animal products by the assembly of microfabricated tissues

Byeongwook Jo et al.

Summary: With the global population growing rapidly, the animal product industry is challenged to increase production while limiting greenhouse gas emissions and animal waste. A solution is the use of microfabrication and tissue engineering techniques to create animal products using microtissues as building blocks for larger assemblies. Methods such as spinning, cell layering, and 3D bioprinting have been proposed to mimic the morphology and function of in vivo animal tissues, showing promising outlooks in the emerging field of in vitro production of animal products.

Formation of contractile 3D bovine muscle tissue for construction of millimetre-thick cultured steak

Mai Furuhashi et al.

Summary: In response to the growing global demand for meat, cultured meat technology is being developed to address potential meat shortages in the future. A method for constructing 3D-cultured bovine muscle tissue with aligned myotubes that contract in response to electrical stimulation has been proposed, showing potential for producing clean cultured steak meat simulating real meat.
