Folate-targeted Pluronic-chitosan nanocapsules loaded with IR780 for near-infrared fluorescence imaging and photothermal-photodynamic therapy of ovarian cancer

Monica Potara et al.

Summary: In this study, a nanotherapeutic platform integrating NIR imaging with photodynamic and photothermal therapies against ovarian cancer was developed. Utilizing IR780 iodide in a polymeric nanoformulation allowed for the construction of a multifunctional nanosystem with fluorescence, singlet oxygen generation, and heating capabilities for imaging-assisted phototherapy. The targeted nanocapsules showed improved therapeutic performance against ovarian cancer cells, demonstrating their potential as theranostic agents for image-guided dual PDT-PTT and imaging-assisted surgery.

Mechanism of deoxynivalenol mediated gastrointestinal toxicity: Insights from mitochondrial dysfunction

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis, involving functions in cellular energy metabolism, redox homeostasis, apoptosis, intestinal immune responses, and bidirectional cross-talk with gut microbe. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a critical factor in DON-induced intestinal toxicity, characterized by respiratory failure and ROS overproduction, leading to apoptosis initiation and inflammatory response. The disruption of bidirectional cross-talk between gut microbe and host mitochondria may contribute to DON-induced intestinal toxicity.

Overcoming barriers in photodynamic therapy harnessing nano-formulation strategies

Jianlei Xie et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has shown great potential in tumor treatment due to its non-invasiveness, spatiotemporal selectivity, lower side-effects, and immune activation ability. However, the clinical application of PDT is restricted by various factors such as traditional photosensitizer limitations, light penetration issues, tumor resistance, and pain induction. Recent advancements in using nanomaterials as photosensitizers or carriers, combined with optimized therapy strategies, have shown promising results in overcoming these barriers and improving the effectiveness of PDT in cancer treatment.
