Fused-Ring Electron Acceptors for Photovoltaics and Beyond

Jiayu Wang et al.

Summary: The emerging solar cell technologies, such as organic solar cells (OSCs) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs), are attracting attention due to advantages like easy fabrication, low cost, flexibility, and short energy payback time. The development of fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs) has led to significant improvements in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of OSCs, reaching up to 18%, and has initiated a shift from fullerene-based systems to nonfullerene systems within the field.

Highly Efficient and Stable All-Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by Near-Infrared Isomerized Polymer Acceptors

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of regioisomerized structures on the molecular and photovoltaic properties of near-infrared polymer acceptors (P(A)s) constructed from n-type fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs). The results showed that the PYTT-2 system had the best photovoltaic performance and stability among the three isomeric FREA-based P(A)s.

15.4% Efficiency all-polymer solar cells

Long Zhang et al.

Summary: By tuning the molecular weights of the polymer donor, researchers achieved a record-high power conversion efficiency in all-polymer solar cells. The combination of polymer donors with a newly reported polymer acceptor resulted in unprecedented high PCE and fill factor values. Detailed morphology investigation revealed the importance of proper phase separation in achieving superior device performance in all-polymer solar cells.

Efficient Electron Transport Layer Free Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells with Superior Device Stability

Haijun Bin et al.

Summary: In this study, a new small-molecule electron donor (H31) was designed and synthesized, which, when blended with the electron acceptor Y6, resulted in solar cells with power conversion efficiencies exceeding 13% with or without the ETL PDINO. The ETL-free cells showed superior shelf life compared to devices with an ETL, suggesting that small-molecule donor-acceptor blends offer interesting prospects for achieving efficient, reproducible, and stable device architectures.

Improved Stability of All-Polymer Solar Cells Using Crosslinkable Donor and Acceptor Polymers Bearing Vinyl Moieties in the Side-Chains

Na Yeon Kwon et al.

Summary: In this study, crosslinkable polymers were successfully synthesized by introducing vinyl functional groups in thiophene-based monomers. The blend films of PBDBT-BV20 and N2200-TV10 showed improved properties after thermal crosslinking, resulting in enhanced power conversion efficiency of polymer solar cells. The crosslinked blend film also exhibited excellent mechanical stability and thermal resistance in flexible PSCs.

Non-fullerene acceptors with branched side chains and improved molecular packing to exceed 18% efficiency in organic solar cells

Chao Li et al.

Summary: The molecular design of acceptor and donor molecules has significantly advanced organic photovoltaics. By introducing branched alkyl chains in non-fullerene acceptors, favorable morphology in the active layer can be achieved, leading to a certified device efficiency of 17.9%. This modification can completely alter the molecular packing behavior of non-fullerene acceptors, resulting in improved structural order and charge transport in thin films.
