More axions from strings

Marco Gorghetto et al.

Summary: Clear evidence of scaling violations in the contribution to QCD axion dark matter abundance from string defects is found, suggesting a large number of axions from strings. Nonlinearities around the QCD scale are shown to play a crucial role in determining the final abundance, resulting in a substantially stronger lower bound on the QCD axion mass in the post-inflationary scenario compared to the naive estimate from misalignment.

Comments on magnetic black holes

Juan Maldacena

Summary: Various aspects of magnetically charged black holes in the Standard Model are discussed, with the argument that electroweak symmetry may be restored in the near horizon region for a range of charges. The presence of fermions with integer magnetic charge Q leads to massless two dimensional fermions moving along magnetic field lines, significantly enhancing Hawking radiation effects.

Axion strings are superconducting

Hajime Fukuda et al.

Summary: This study examines the cosmological consequences of the superconductivity of QCD axion strings and finds that vortons in this scenario are generally unstable, posing no cosmological difficulty. In the presence of a primordial magnetic field, a large current induced on axion strings slows them down, leading to an increase in the number of strings per Hubble volume. Additionally, the QCD axion window is shifted by orders of magnitude in some parts of the parameter space.

On stability of fermionic superconducting current in cosmic string

Masahiro Ibe et al.

Summary: Recently, the chiral superconductivity of cosmic string in the axion model has been studied, showing that the superconductivity can be stable in certain conditions. However, in typical axion models, the carrier particles decay in curved strings, and the lifetime of Vorton is close to that of the carrier particle in a vacuum.
