Edge modes of gravity. Part III. Corner simplicity constraints

Laurent Freidel et al.

Summary: In this work, a systematic analysis of the corner symplectic structure encoding the symmetry algebra of gravity is conducted, along with a thorough analysis of the simplicity constraints. The paper presents a particle-like description of (quantum) geometry based on fixing the Heisenberg frame and simplifying the Poincare symmetry to a Lorentz subalgebra. The study also introduces a regularization of the corner algebra and examines the covariant and continuous irreducible representations of the infinite-dimensional corner algebra as an alternative path to quantization.

The effective action of superrotation modes

Kevin Nguyen et al.

Summary: Starting from an analysis of four-dimensional asymptotically flat gravity in first order formulation, we show that superrotation reparametrization modes are governed by an Alekseev-Shatashvili action on the celestial sphere. This two-dimensional conformal theory describes spontaneous symmetry breaking of Virasoro superrotations together with the explicit symmetry breaking of more general Diff(S2) superrotations. By reformulating the asymptotic field equations and symmetries of the radiative vacuum sector in terms of a Chern-Simons theory at null infinity, and subsequently performing a Hamiltonian reduction of this theory onto the celestial sphere, we arrive at this result.

The holographic nature of null infinity

Alok Laddha et al.

Summary: This article argues that in a theory of quantum gravity in a four dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime, information about massless excitations can be obtained from a small neighborhood of the past boundary of future null infinity, and observations near a cut of future null infinity can provide information about the state, with certain limitations. These findings have implications for the information paradox and offer contrasting results to the expected Page curve.

Celestial operator products of gluons and gravitons

M. Pate et al.

Summary: The operator product expansion on the celestial sphere of conformal primary gluons and gravitons reveals recursion relations between operators with conformal weights differing by half-integers. For tree-level Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, these recursion relations tightly constrain the leading celestial OPE coefficients, which are completely determined by the Euler beta function. The poles in the beta functions are associated with conformally soft currents.

The Weyl BMS group and Einstein's equations

Laurent Freidel et al.

Summary: We propose an extension of the BMS group, referred to as Weyl BMS or BMSW, which includes super-translations, local Weyl rescalings, and arbitrary diffeomorphisms of the 2d sphere metric. By generalizing the Barnich-Troessaert bracket, we demonstrate that the Noether charges of the BMSW group provide a centerless representation of the BMSW Lie algebra at every cross section of null infinity. This result implies that the flux-balance laws for the Noether charges validate the asymptotic Einstein's equations at null infinity.

Extended corner symmetry, charge bracket and Einstein's equations

Laurent Freidel et al.

Summary: The study developed a covariant phase space formalism allowing for certain characteristics in the vector field generators and constructed a unique charge bracket determined by the choice of Lagrangian representative. The notion of corner symmetry algebra was extended to include surface translation symmetries, and the charge bracket was proven to provide a canonical representation of the extended corner symmetry algebra.

Coadjoint representation of the BMS group on celestial Riemann surfaces

Glenn Barnich et al.

Summary: The coadjoint representation of the BMS group in four dimensions is constructed in a formulation that covers both the sphere and the punctured plane. Structure constants are derived for different choices of bases, and the conserved current algebra of non-radiative asymptotically flat spacetimes is explicitly interpreted in these terms.

Gravitational edge modes, coadjoint orbits, and hydrodynamics

William Donnelly et al.

Summary: The phase space of general relativity in a finite subregion is characterized by edge modes localized at the codimension-2 boundary, transforming under an infinite-dimensional group of symmetries. The quantization of this symmetry algebra is conjectured to be an important aspect of quantum gravity. A further infinite family of Casimirs can be constructed from the curvature of the normal bundle of the boundary surface. These arise as invariants of the little group, which is the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms, and are the analogues of spin.

Isolated surfaces and symmetries of gravity

Luca Ciambelli et al.

Summary: This study explores the distribution of conserved charges in theories with gauge symmetries and the symmetries of gravity dynamics. It suggests that focusing on the maximal symmetry could help further elucidate the quantization of gravity. The research presents an algebraic off-shell derivation of the maximal closed subalgebra of full bulk diffeomorphisms in the presence of an isolated corner, showing the geometric description of the latter in spacetime. The analysis reveals that these descriptions are independent of any dynamics or pseudo-Riemannian structure in the bulk.

Definitions of angular momentum and super angular momentum in asymptotically flat spacetimes: Properties and applications to compact-binary mergers

Arwa Elhashash et al.

Summary: This paper investigates concepts related to spacetime symmetries in general relativity, including the BMS group, angular momentum, and supermomentum. It finds that requiring angular momentum to vanish in flat spacetime restricts the two parameters to be equal, while not requiring agreement with a common Hamiltonian definition may result in a one-parameter family of angular momenta. It also proposes a similar two-parameter family of super angular momentum and estimates the effects using numerical-relativity surrogate waveforms.
