Renormalization Group Flows on Line Defects

Gabriel Cuomo et al.

Summary: This article investigates line defects in conformal field theories and reveals that the flow on these defects is irreversible, accompanied by a decreasing entropy function. The generalization of the g theorem to line defects in arbitrary dimensions is demonstrated through a flow between Wilson loops in four dimensions.

Defect a-theorem and a-maximization

Yifan Wang

Summary: This paper studies the universal behaviors of a CFT in the presence of defects, proving that the defect a-anomaly must decrease under unitary defect RG flows and deriving the relation between the defect a- and c-anomalies and the U(1)(R) symmetry anomalies. The methods are illustrated with examples and the potential collider bounds on defect anomalies are discussed.

Monodromy defects from hyperbolic space

Simone Giombi et al.

Summary: We study monodromy defects in O(N) symmetric scalar field theories in d dimensions. We first study the general monodromy defect in the free field theory, and then develop the large N expansion of the defect in the interacting theory, focusing on the case of N complex fields with a one-parameter monodromy condition. We also use the epsilon-expansion in d=4-epsilon to check the large N approach. When the defect has spherical geometry, its expectation value can be obtained by computing the free energy of the twisted theory on S-1 x Hd-1. We also discuss the calculation of the defect CFT data using the S-1 x Hd-1 setup.

Line and surface defects for the free scalar field

Edoardo Lauria et al.

Summary: For a single free scalar field in d ≥ 2 dimensions, most unitary conformal defects are 'trivial' and do not have interesting dynamics, with exceptions being monodromy defects in d ≥ 4 and co-dimension three defects in d ≥ 5. It is shown that the n-point correlation functions of a conformal theory with a generalized free spectrum must be those of the generalized free theory as an intermediate result.

Surface defect, anomalies and b-extremization

Yifan Wang

Summary: This study investigates new types of anomalies in conformal field theories with surface defects. By explicitly deriving and analyzing the scalar theory under defect RG flow, the b-theorem and a universal relation between the b-anomaly and U(1)(r) symmetry's 't Hooft anomaly are confirmed. Additionally, the b-extremization principle is established as a powerful tool for extracting the b-anomaly of strongly coupled surface defects.

Boundary conformal invariants and the conformal anomaly in five dimensions

Amin Faraji Astaneh et al.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed analysis of the anomaly in five dimensions, including the discovery of a new conformal invariant. By computing the heat kernel coefficient a(5), the conformal anomaly is determined and the values of all boundary conformal charges are identified.

Trace anomaly for Weyl fermions using the Breitenlohner-Maison scheme for γ*

S. Abdallah et al.

Summary: In this study, the trace anomaly for Weyl fermions was revisited using dimensional regularization. It was found that the parity-odd contribution vanishes, while the parity-even contribution is half that of a Dirac fermion. The full renormalized expectation value of the fermion stress tensor to second order in perturbations around Minkowski spacetime was computed, confirming its conservation.

Holographic entanglement entropy of the Coulomb branch

Adam Chalabi et al.

Summary: In this study, entanglement entropy of a spherical region in (3 + 1)-dimensional N = 4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory was computed using holographic methods. It was found that the entanglement entropy monotonically decreases as the sphere's radius increases, which is consistent with certain theoretical expectations. The study also observed similar decreasing trends in the entanglement entropy of a symmetric-representation Wilson line screened in SU(N - 1), even though there is no established physical principle to explain this behavior.

Surface defects in holographic 5d SCFTs

Michael Gutperle et al.

Summary: In this study, holography is used to investigate codimension-2 surface defects in 5d SCFTs engineered by (p, q) 5-brane webs. The three-dimensional defects are realized by D3-branes ending on the brane web, with their holographic representation in Type IIB AdS(6) solutions as probe D3-branes. The study focuses on conformal and non-conformal defects preserving different fractions of supersymmetry, providing explicit solutions for a sample of 5d SCFTs, including the T-N theories.

Anomalous symmetries end at the boundary

Ryan Thorngren et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the impact of the 't Hooft anomaly symmetry, including the obstruction to defining symmetric boundary conditions and the results regarding gravitational anomalies. By analyzing the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions and current Ward identities, we demonstrate the obstruction to theories with perturbative anomalies.

Monodromy defects in free field theories

Lorenzo Bianchi et al.

Summary: We study co-dimension two monodromy defects in theories of conformally coupled scalars and free Dirac fermions in arbitrary d dimensions, characterizing them through various correlation functions and anomaly coefficients. By calculating the universal contributions to entanglement entropy, we verify the values of defect central charges and extract universal parts of Renyi entropy. Additionally, we identify relevant deformations in singular defect theories and explore the renormalization group flow towards an IR fixed point. Finally, we analyze Gukov-Witten defects in free d = 4 Maxwell theory and show their central charges vanish.

Effective field theory of 6D SUSY RG Flows

Jonathan J. Heckman et al.

Summary: Motivated by its potential use in constraining the structure of 6D renormalization group flows, this research determines the low energy dilaton-axion effective field theory of conformal and global symmetry breaking in 6D conformal field theories, which can also be applied to constrain properties of Higgs branch and mixed branch flows in 6D superconformal field theories. The study suggests the possibility of an interacting dilaton effective theory in 6D SCFTs even when certain four-dilaton four-derivative interaction terms vanish, due to large momentum modifications to four-point dilaton scattering amplitudes.
