Phytophthora root rot of chickpea: inoculum concentration and seasonally dependent success for qPCR based predictions of disease and yield loss

S. L. Bithell et al.

Summary: Phytophthora root rot caused by Phytophthora medicaginis is a significant disease of chickpea in Australia. This study developed a qPCR test to quantify Pm inoculum concentrations in soil and found that it could detect moderate to high levels of Pm inoculum, but not low levels capable of causing disease and yield loss in conducive seasons. The qPCR test shows potential to support in-field diagnostics for PRR in chickpea.

Use of Contemporary Groups in the Construction of Multi-Environment Trial Datasets for Selection in Plant Breeding Programs

Alison Smith et al.

Summary: This paper presents an approach for constructing MET datasets that optimizes the information available for selection decisions by using contemporary groups and data bands. The methods are demonstrated to be superior in selecting superior lines compared to other forms, particularly those related to a single year.

A Trimethylguanosine Synthase1-like (TGS1) homologue is implicated in vernalisation and flowering time control

Candy M. Taylor et al.

Summary: A mutation in a TGS1-like homologue was identified as a candidate gene for the efl mutation in narrow-leafed lupin, leading to changes in flowering phenology and vernalisation requirement. This study sheds light on the molecular mechanism of vernalisation control in narrow-leafed lupin and provides important insights into flowering time control in legume plants.

Lens orientalis Contributes Quantitative Trait Loci and Candidate Genes Associated With Ascochyta Blight Resistance in Lentil

Rama Harinath Reddy Dadu et al.

Summary: This study identified major quantitative trait loci (QTL) regions on linkage group 5 and another QTL on LG2 that are associated with Ascochyta lentis resistance in lentils. The QTL regions contain putative candidate genes potentially involved in defense responses to fungal infection, which could aid in marker-assisted resistance selection in lentil breeding programs.

Speed breeding in pulses: an opportunity to improve the efficiency of breeding programs

Federico Cazzola et al.

Summary: Traditional pulse breeding programs are time consuming, but speed breeding technology can improve efficiency and reduce costs by accelerating photosynthesis and flowering through optimizing light, temperature, etc., without involving transgenesis or gene editing.
