Azollaferns testify: seed plants and ferns share a common ancestor for leucoanthocyanidin reductase enzymes

Erbil Gungor et al.

Summary: Questions regarding in vivo substrates for proanthocyanidin biosynthesis and condensation remain unanswered, with gaps in understanding transport and biogenesis in 'tannosomes'. This study examined the evolution of proanthocyanidin biosynthesis in ferns, revealing (epi)catechin polymers synthesized in the sporophyte of Azolla ferns. The research also identified LAR and WLAR enzymes with differing substrate binding sites as an evolutionary innovation of the common ancestor of fern and seed plants.

MetaboAnalyst 5.0: narrowing the gap between raw spectra and functional insights

Zhiqiang Pang et al.

Summary: MetaboAnalyst version 5.0 has been introduced to facilitate comprehensive metabolomics data analysis and interpretation, with the aim of narrowing the gap from raw data to functional insights. Three new modules have been developed to assist in this goal, along with various other new functions and improvements in interface, graphics, and codebase. Users can now easily switch between compatible modules for a streamlined data analysis experience.

The evolution of the phenylpropanoid pathway entailed pronounced radiations and divergences of enzyme families

Sophie de Vries et al.

Summary: Land plants respond to environmental fluctuations by producing specialized metabolites, with the phenylpropanoid pathway playing a crucial role. Recent research has shown that enzyme families involved in this pathway have undergone significant radiations and divergence in major groups of land plants, with algal candidates also identified. This evolutionary versatility may contribute to the rich specialized metabolism observed in embryophytes.
