Effects of nano-enabled agricultural strategies on food quality: Current knowledge and future research needs

Alejandra Gomez et al.

Summary: The use of nano-enabled agricultural products, such as nanofertilizers and nanopesticides, is increasingly feasible for improving agrochemical delivery efficiency to crop plants. Experimental results suggest that nanoagrochemicals have the potential to reduce environmental impact and increase crop production, but also result in alterations in crop quality. Additional research is needed to understand the specific effects on human health from consuming agricultural products treated with nano-agrochemicals.

ZnO nanoparticles effect on pollen grain germination and pollen tube elongation

Shizue Yoshihara et al.

Summary: Plant germ cells, like pollen grains, can be influenced by exposure to metal nanoparticles in the environment. The study found that low-solubility metal nanoparticles can adhere to pollen grains, releasing dissolved metal ions which are continuously absorbed by the cells, affecting the germination and elongation of pollen tubes.

Copper Oxide Nanomaterial Fate in Plant Tissue: Nanoscale Impacts on Reproductive Tissues

Marta Marmiroli et al.

Summary: The study investigated the response of zucchini plants exposed to copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles as a potential nanoscale fertilizer. RNA-seq analysis and X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that nano-CuO uniquely stimulated plant response, modulated mitochondrial and chloroplast functions, and potentially led to nanoparticle biotransformation within plant tissues. This suggests nano-CuO application could be an important strategy in nanoenabled agriculture to minimize environmental agrochemical inputs.

Exogenous application of ZnO nanoparticles and ZnSO4 distinctly influence the metabolic response in Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Hajar Salehi et al.

Summary: The toxic effects of different chemical species of zinc, including ZnO nanoparticles and bulk ZnSO4, on bean plants were investigated in this study. The accumulation of zinc in plant tissues varied depending on the application type, zinc form, and concentration, leading to distinct morphological, physiological, and redox responses. High concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles and bulk ZnSO4 inhibited plant growth and induced stress symptoms, while low dosages of ZnSO4 promoted growth and improved physiological and antioxidative responses.
