How potassium came to be the dominant biological cation: of metabolism, chemiosmosis, and cation selectivity since the beginnings of life

Nikolay Korolev

Summary: Potassium is the major cation in the cytoplasm of almost all living cells, while sodium dominates in the extracellular fluids. Both prokaryotes and eukaryotes require elaborate mechanisms and significant energy to maintain the asymmetric distribution of K+ and Na+. This essay presents original evidence explaining how bacteria chose potassium at the beginning of evolution and why it remains essential for eukaryotes.

The origin of symbiogenesis: An annotated English translation of Mereschkowsky's 1910 paper on the theory of two plasma lineages

Klaus V. Kowallik et al.

Summary: In 1910, Russian biologist Konstantin Sergejewitch Mereschkowsky published a theory about the origin of life and nucleated cells, positing that all life forms descend from two fundamentally distinct organismal lineages. He proposed that thermophilic autotrophs were ancient and placed the phylogenetic root among bacteria lacking chlorophyll. Through endosymbiosis, ancestral mesophilic anucleate heterotrophs were inferred to have evolved into diverse organisms.

A window into the abiotic carbon cycle - Acetate and formate in fracture waters in 2.7 billion year-old host rocks of the Canadian Shield

B. Sherwood Lollar et al.

Summary: Recent studies have expanded from investigation of abiotic methane formation to include abiotic production of organics such as acetate and formate, as well as processes of abiotic organic synthesis on the ocean-world moons of Saturn and Jupiter, raising interest in potential Earth analogs for investigation of prebiotic/abiotic processes to an unprecedented level. High concentrations of acetate and formate in saline fracture waters below the surface in Canadian Shield provide evidence for the importance of abiotic organic synthesis in the deep carbon cycle at this hydrogeologically isolated site.

The evolution of oxygen-utilizing enzymes suggests early biosphere oxygenation

Jagoda Jablonska et al.

Summary: Phylogenetic dating of oxygen-utilizing enzymes suggests that oxygen became widely available to living organisms well before the Great Oxidation Event, around 3.1 billion years ago. This indicates a burst of emergence of oxygenases and other oxidoreductases, pointing to a wider availability of oxygen in the Earth's history.

The Autotrophic Core: An Ancient Network of 404 Reactions Converts H2, CO2, and NH3 into Amino Acids, Bases, and Cofactors

Jessica L. E. Wimmer et al.

Summary: The study identified the ancient core of autotrophic metabolism, revealing that the reactions were formed in a water environment characterized by highly reducing and continuously far from equilibrium conditions. The autotrophic core includes a large number of NADH and NADPH-dependent redox reactions.

Pyrophosphate and Irreversibility in Evolution, or why PPi Is Not an Energy Currency and why Nature Chose Triphosphates

Jessica L. E. Wimmer et al.

Summary: Pyrophosphate (PPi) may not be an ancient energy currency in biological evolution, but rather an ancient mechanism that imparts irreversibility to the life process towards growth. The triphosphate moiety of ATP was chosen by nature as biochemistry's universal energy currency.

High CO2 levels drive the TCA cycle backwards towards autotrophy

Lydia Steffens et al.

Summary: In Deltoproteobacterium Hippea maritima, the TCA cycle can be reversed by high CO2 partial pressures for autotrophic carbon fixation. This reversed oxidative TCA cycle could have functioned in autotrophic CO2 fixation in a primordial atmosphere rich in CO2.

The metabolic network of the last bacterial common ancestor

Joana C. Xavier et al.

Summary: Researchers reconstructed the habitat and lifestyle of the last bacterial common ancestor (LBCA) by analyzing 146 LCBA protein families, indicating that the LBCA was rod-shaped and the first lineage to diverge from the ancestral bacterial stem was most similar to modern Clostridia, followed by other autotrophs that harbor the acetyl-CoA pathway.
