Agricultural land-use favours Mucoromycotinian, but not Glomeromycotinian, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi across ten biomes

Felipe E. Albornoz et al.

Summary: This study shows that Glomeromycotinian AMF are widely present in various ecosystems, while Mucoromycotina AMF are more favored in agricultural landscapes, especially in temperate regions. Temperature, rainfall, soil pH, and plant richness strongly influence the richness and composition of both fungal groups. The research highlights the importance of understanding the ecological niches and phylogeny of these different groups of AMF.

Pleurostoma Decline of Olive Trees Caused by Pleurostoma richardsiae in California

Daniel P. Lawrence et al.

Summary: A new pathogenic fungus causing decline of olive trees in California has been identified, with different olive cultivars showing equal susceptibility to it. Moreover, its presence in other symptomatic hosts suggests that it is widespread in agricultural systems in California and should be considered an emerging pathogen.

Identification of microbial signatures linked to oilseed rape yield decline at the landscape scale

Sally Hilton et al.

Summary: This study reveals that oilseed rape yield decline is associated with rotation frequency in real-world agricultural systems, with significant differences in the environmental and agronomic drivers of protist, bacterial, and fungal communities. It was found that the assembly of fungi, but not bacteria or protists, was influenced by oilseed rape rotation frequency. Individual abundant bacterial OTUs were correlated with either yield or rotation frequency, while a variety of fungal and protist pathogens were detected in roots and rhizosphere soil, with some showing increased relative abundance as rotation frequency increased. Notably, the fungal pathogen Olpidium brassicae was found to increase in presence with short rotations and low yield, while the root endophyte Tetracladium spp. showed the opposite associations, indicating their potential role in benefiting the host plant.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) shows higher mycorrhizal colonization when planted in agroforestry than in monoculture

Rodrigo da Silva Maia et al.

Summary: The study found that oil palm planted in biodiverse agroforestry systems had 3 times higher arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization compared to monocultures, indicating that biodiverse agroforestry systems can increase mycorrhizal colonization of oil palms.

Contrasting Responses of Rhizosphere Bacterial, Fungal, Protist, and Nematode Communities to Nitrogen Fertilization and Crop Genotype in Field Grown Oilseed Rape (Brassica napus)

Emma Picot et al.

Summary: The rhizosphere microbiome plays a crucial role in determining crop health, with current research biased toward bacterial communities. Nitrogen fertilization has a weak effect on fungal, bacterial, and protist communities, impacting the relative abundance of fungal pathogens. Crop genotype influences fungal community composition, but not assembly of bacteria, protist or nematode communities. Overall, soil and rhizosphere nutrient stoichiometry and crop genotype are key factors influencing crop health through microbial interactions.

Evidence for Niche Differentiation in the Environmental Responses of Co-occurring Mucoromycotinian Fine Root Endophytes and Glomeromycotinian Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi

Felipe E. Albornoz et al.

Summary: The study found that fine root endophytes (FRE) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) exhibited similar responses to some environmental factors (such as soil phosphorus, soil pH) and different responses to others (such as temperature). This suggests niche differentiation among these co-occurring mycorrhizal associates.
