Socio-ecological Factors of Zoonotic Diseases Exposure in Colorado Dairy Workers

Jairo Enrique Palomares Velosa et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of socio-ecological factors on zoonotic bacterial and protozoal diseases in 42 workers on two dairy farms. Results revealed occupational exposure to Salmonella ser. Dublin, E. coli, and Campylobacter spp. Factors such as self-efficacy and negative workplace perceptions were found to be risk factors for Salmonella Dublin exposure, while safety knowledge and risk perceptions were protective factors of exposure.

Prevalence of hepatitis E virus among swine in China from 2010 to 2019: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: Hepatitis E virus infection is common among swine in China, with a higher prevalence observed in central regions compared to other areas. The prevalence has decreased in recent years and is higher in boars than in sows. Strengthening HEV testing in boars and improving environmental control measures could help reduce the risk of HEV infection in pigs and humans in China.

Molecular Epidemiology of Human Cryptosporidiosis in Low-and Middle-Income Countries

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: Cryptosporidiosis is a significant cause of diarrhea and diarrhea-related mortality in children, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Studies have shown that there is high genetic diversity of Cryptosporidium spp. in humans in these countries, with anthroponotic transmission playing a major role. Implementing WASH interventions is recommended to prevent and control human cryptosporidiosis in low- and middle-income countries.

Genomic Information on Linezolid-Resistant Sequence-Type 398 Livestock-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from a Pig

Gi Yong Lee et al.

Summary: A linezolid-resistant ST398 LA-MRSA strain PJFA-521M was isolated from a pig in Korea, and in silico genome analysis revealed the presence of the cfr gene responsible for linezolid resistance. The strain also carried newer antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence genes, especially within mobile genetic elements, highlighting the importance of monitoring antimicrobial use in pig farms for preventing the spread of multidrug-resistant pathogens.

Adaptation, spread and transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in farmed minks and associated humans in the Netherlands

Lu Lu et al.

Summary: In the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 was detected in mink farms in April 2020, leading to infections in minks and farm workers. The virus spread rapidly between mink farms, with a significant mutation in the Spike protein. Movement of people and distance between farms were significant predictors in viral dissemination between farms.

Avian influenza A (H7N9) virus: from low pathogenic to highly pathogenic

William J. Liu et al.

Summary: Avian influenza A (H7N9) virus, closely associated with live poultry markets, has caused infections in humans in China since 2013. Five waves of the epidemic occurred between 2013 and 2017, with the emergence of highly pathogenic strains causing concern. Rapid response and control by specialists and officials utilized new technologies and surveillance tools. Characteristics of the virus were reviewed from multiple perspectives to provide tools for reducing future threats from H7N9 and other viruses.

Summary: This study aimed to expand the knowledge on human cryptosporidiosis in Sweden by studying Cryptosporidium-positive fecal samples collected from patients infected in Sweden and abroad between 2013-2014. The research revealed a large diversity of species and subtypes, with zoonotic C. parvum subtypes dominating in both local and travel-related cases, while infections by non-hominis and non-parvum species were common in both settings.

Molecular Evolution and Adaptation of Livestock-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) Sequence Type 9

Fangyou Yu et al.

Summary: Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) sequence type 9 (ST9) has emerged and disseminated in Asia, with evidence of direct transmission of animal-adapted strains to human hosts. Genetic analysis suggests that ST9 originated from human-adapted strains and evolved through genetic events to adapt to animal hosts, acquiring animal-specific virulent factors and multidrug resistance genes. The rapid clonal expansion of multidrug-resistant ST9 strains in mainland China and Taiwan underscores the need for effective surveillance of antibiotic consumption in animal husbandry to control antimicrobial resistance spread.

Summary: The study found that livestock-associated MRSA ST398 isolates may spread between animals, humans, and the environment on dairy farms, posing a potential risk. Hygiene practices during milking time, biosecurity measures, and pre-treatment of milk before feeding it to calves can help reduce the risk of MRSA transmission.
