Impact of a novelRickettsiasymbiont on the life history and virus transmission capacity of its host whitefly (Bemisia tabaci)

Teng Lei et al.

Summary: The maternally inherited Torix group Rickettsia, RiTBt, was discovered in the whitefly species Asia II 1. Although it did not significantly affect the life history parameters of the whitefly, it slightly enhanced whitefly transmission of cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMuV). This symbiont may have potential implications in the biology of other host whiteflies.

First evidence for thermal tolerance benefits of the bacterial symbiont Cardinium in an invasive whitefly, Bemisia tabaci

Kun Yang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Cardinium can enhance the thermal tolerance of whitefly, with a significant correlation to host genetic background. Cardinium infection increases the longevity and oviposition period of both genetic lines, but confers additional benefits of fecundity and pre-adult period to LS line. Population parameters indicate that Cardinium infection provides fitness benefits to LS line but not to SG line. Transcriptome analysis shows that genes related to homeostasis and metamorphosis are highly expressed in Cardinium-infected B. tabaci.
