A composite oral hygiene score and the risk of oral cancer and its subtypes: a large-scale propensity score-based study

Qingrong Deng et al.

Summary: This study found a potential relationship between oral hygiene and the risk of oral cancer, especially in relation to gingival and buccal mucosa sites, and squamous cell carcinoma. Improving poor oral hygiene habits is crucial for the prevention of oral cancer.

Impact of preoperative 6-minute walk distance on long-term prognosis after esophagectomy in patients with esophageal cancer

Summary: The preoperative 6-minute walk distance is associated with long-term prognosis in patients undergoing esophagectomy. Patients with shorter walk distances had lower 5-year overall survival and relapse-free survival rates after surgery.

Efficacy of enhanced prehabilitation for patients with esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy

Yuji Akiyama et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed the data of 48 consecutive patients who underwent radical esophagectomy with gastric tube reconstruction, investigating the safety and efficacy of enhanced prehabilitation (EP) for patients with esophageal cancer. The EP group showed significantly higher preoperative and postoperative 6-minute walk distance compared to the control group, and had significantly lower rates of respiratory complications and atelectasis. EP was performed safely and improved exercise tolerance for patients, suggesting it may help prevent respiratory complications before esophagectomy.

Broad transcriptional response of the human esophageal epithelium to proton pump inhibitors

Summary: The study revealed that PPIs have broad effects on esophageal epithelial cells, including reducing cellular proliferation and IL-13-induced responses. PPIs exert their effects through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling pathway.

Missing and decayed teeth, oral hygiene and dental staining in relation to esophageal cancer risk: ESCCAPE case-control study in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Blandina T. Mmbaga et al.

Summary: In Tanzania, using oral charcoal, brushing with a chewed stick, and having missing/decayed teeth may be risk factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The association between ESCC and dental fluorosis suffered from severe exposure misclassification, making it difficult to determine any effects of fluorosis, extrinsic staining, or reverse causality.

Nutrition as a Key Modifiable Factor for Periodontitis and Main Chronic Diseases

Prescilla Martinon et al.

Summary: Nutrition plays a crucial role in preventing chronic diseases, including periodontal disease. High intake of sugar, saturated fat, low fiber, among other nutrients, increases the risk of periodontal diseases, while a diet low in sugar and high in fiber helps reduce this risk.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

A clinical nomogram incorporating salivary Desulfovibrio desulfuricans level and oral hygiene index for predicting colorectal cancer

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the oral microbiome can be used for the diagnosis and risk prediction of colorectal cancer. By examining microbial biomarkers in saliva and risk factors associated with CRC, a predictive model and clinical nomogram were established, suggesting that developing good oral hygiene habits may reduce the risk of CRC.

Association between infection with Campylobacter species, poor oral health and environmental risk factors on esophageal cancer: a hospital-based case-control study in Thailand

Arisara Poosari et al.

Summary: This study found that in Thailand, major risk factors for EC include smoking, alcohol use, family history of cancer, history of gastroesophageal reflux disease, poor oral hygiene, and Campylobacter spp. infection. The combination of poor oral hygiene and Campylobacter species infection may act as an important etiological risk factor for EC.

Oral infectious bacteria in dental plaque and saliva as risk factors in patients with esophageal cancer

Machiko Kawasaki et al.

Summary: This study found that high levels of periodontopathic bacteria and Streptococcus anginosus were detected in cancer tissue from patients with esophageal cancer. The prevalence and abundance of certain oral bacteria were significantly higher in the cancer group compared to the control group, suggesting a potential association between oral microbiota and esophageal cancer, with implications for early diagnosis.
