Characterizing the portability of phage-encoded homologous recombination proteins

Gabriel T. Filsinger et al.

Summary: Bacteriophage single-stranded DNA annealing proteins (SSAPs) interact with the C termini of single-stranded binding proteins in host bacteria, enhancing genome editing efficiency. Co-expressing SSAPs with SSBs can improve editing efficiency, and SSAPs can be transferred between species only if compatibility with the host domain is maintained. High-efficiency HR surpasses mutational capacity of common random mutagenesis methods, generating exceptional phenotypes.

MARSBOx: Fungal and Bacterial Endurance From a Balloon-Flown Analog Mission in the Stratosphere

Marta Cortesao et al.

Summary: Experiments exposing fungi and bacteria to Mars-like conditions showed variable resistance levels to radiation, with Aspergillus niger and Salinisphaera shabanensis demonstrating the most resilience. These findings suggest that microorganisms associated with spacecraft may have different survival capabilities in extreme environments like Mars.

Methylobacterium ajmalii sp. nov., Isolated From the International Space Station

Swati Bijlani et al.

Summary: Three novel bacterial strains, IF7SW-B2(T), IIF1SW-B5, and IIF4SW-B5, belonging to the genus Methylobacterium, were isolated from the International Space Station (ISS). These strains are proposed to be a new species named Methylobacterium ajmalii based on genomic, phylogenetic, biochemical, and fatty acid analyses.
