The Oral and Gut Bacterial Microbiomes: Similarities, Differences, and Connections

Katherine A. Maki et al.

Summary: Comparing oral and gut microbiome communities in healthy humans revealed that oral microbiome has higher alpha diversity compared to the gut microbiome, with significant differences at the species level but slightly similar at the strain level. Shotgun metagenomics sequencing showed greater taxonomic resolution and shared taxonomy between oral and gut microbiomes.

Oral microbial dysbiosis and its performance in predicting oral cancer

Shih-Chi Su et al.

Summary: Dysbiosis of the oral microbiome may dictate the progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), with risky behaviors and individuals' oral health condition affecting the composition of the oral microbiome. Disruptions in the oral microbial population, particularly related to oral tumorigenicity, have been identified in OSCC patients, indicating a potential functional role of oral microbiome in formulating a tumor microenvironment and influencing the production of tumor-suppressive metabolites. Furthermore, microbial signatures related to oral cancer have been successfully replicated across discovery and validation cohorts.

Complete Genomes of Clade G6 Saccharibacteria Suggest a Divergent Ecological Niche and Lifestyle

Jonathon L. Baker

Summary: The study identified highly novel Saccharibacteria G6 branch, with highly divergent genomes compared to G1 branch, having 50% of core genes with unknown functions. The G6 branch may have a distinct lifestyle and ecological niche, possibly related to alternative hosts and/or host dependencies.

Resilience of Microbial Communities after Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment of a Eutrophic Lake to Suppress Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms

Tim Piel et al.

Summary: The study showed that low concentrations of H2O2 effectively suppressed dominant cyanobacteria in lakes and had impacts on the microbial community. Some Proteobacteria benefitted from the treatments while certain bacterial taxa declined. Microbial communities experienced significant changes within the first 24 hours after H2O2 addition but recovered shortly after, indicating resilience.

The oralome and its dysbiosis: New insights into oral microbiome-host interactions

Allan Radaic et al.

Summary: The oralome is a summary of the interactions between oral microorganisms and the host, which can impact the health and disease status of the host. Current research focuses on changes in the oral microbiome in the oral environment and discusses techniques for modulating the dysbiotic oral microbiome to prevent and treat diseases.
