Enteral Feeding Intolerance: Updates in Definitions and Pathophysiology

Annika Reintam Blaser et al.

Summary: Enteral feeding intolerance (EFI) is a common feature in critically ill patients worldwide, characterized by vomiting or large gastric residual volumes associated with enteral feeding. Despite the lack of a clear definition, a pragmatic definition for clinical practice is reducing enteral nutrition due to features of gastrointestinal dysfunction. Research is needed to develop a more detailed definition of EFI for improving patient-centered outcomes.

Ramadan Fasting Leads to Shifts in Human Gut Microbiota Structured by Dietary Composition

Ikram Ali et al.

Summary: The structure and diversity of human gut microbiota are directly related to diet, and our study found that diet was the most significant influence on microbiota, correlated with ethnic groups. Additionally, fasting led to enrichment of specific bacterial taxa in some individuals.

A bridge for short-chain fatty acids to affect inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease positively: by changing gut barrier

Wangxin Liu et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) may have positive effects on inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and are related to gut microbiota and gut barrier health. SCFAs seem to maintain gut barrier by promoting intestinal epithelial cells growth, strengthening intestinal tight connection, and regulating gut microbiota and immune cells activities.
