Mercury Reduction by Nanoparticulate Vivianite

Marjorie Etique et al.

Summary: The study investigates the chemical synthesis and Hg-II reduction ability of nanoparticulate vivianite, finding that vivianite has a similar reduction ability to other effective Hg-II reducing minerals. It suggests that vivianite may play a role in Hg removal and MeHg formation limitation in environments rich in Fe and organic matter.

Summary: The study introduces a novel and rapid method for analyzing Mercury (Hg) stable isotope signatures in solid samples, completing the analysis in less than 15 minutes. The results demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy, and high recovery rate of this method, with reliable and unaffected results even by system modifications.

Distribution of mercury isotope signatures in Yundang Lagoon, Xiamen, China, after long-term interventions

Shuyuan Huang et al.

Summary: Isotope signatures of mercury (Hg) in various fractions from Yundang Lagoon, Xiamen, China showed significant variations in mass-dependent and mass-independent fractionations. Three main sources of Hg in the lagoon seawater were identified, with photochemical reactions being the main process causing isotope fractionation. Mercury isotopes were found to be powerful tools for tracing Hg sources and understanding Hg biogeochemical cycling, demonstrating the importance of long-term interventions in the lagoon.

Mass-Independent Fractionation of Even and Odd Mercury Isotopes during Atmospheric Mercury Redox Reactions

Xuewu Fu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that oxidized Hg at high altitudes exhibits even isotopic fractionation characteristics, while rainfall Hg shows both even and odd isotopic fractionation, possibly due to photo-reduction of Hg-II in clouds. Observations of MIF in free tropospheric Hg-0 indicate that oxidation of Hg-0 in high-altitude air masses produces opposite even- and odd-MIF in Hg-0 and oxidized Hg-II.
