Estimating individual-level plant traits at scale

Sergio Marconi et al.

Summary: Functional ecology focuses on describing ecological communities based on their traits, and analyzing trait distributions within and among forests can significantly enhance understanding of community composition and ecosystem function. Remote sensing methods that identify individual trees and estimate their traits provide continuous large-scale data linked to biological individuals, improving predictions and estimates of ecosystem traits.

Novel Insights to Be Gained From Applying Metacommunity Theory to Long-Term, Spatially Replicated Biodiversity Data

Sydne Record et al.

Summary: The loss of global biodiversity and its associated ecosystem services is accelerating at an alarming rate. Metacommunity theory offers a framework for understanding the multi-scale processes driving changes in biodiversity over time and space. Coordinated research and observation networks, such as the United States Long Term Ecological Research program, present an opportunity to advance our understanding of biodiversity patterns and improve conservation efforts.

NASA's surface biology and geology designated observable: A perspective on surface imaging algorithms

Kerry Cawse-Nicholson et al.

Summary: The paper summarizes the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) as a Designated Targeted Observable (DO) recommended in the 2017-2027 National Academies' Decadal Survey, focusing on agriculture, natural habitats, water use/quality, and urban development. It reviews existing algorithms in each category and synthesizes the findings of over 130 scientists.

ecocomDP: A flexible data design pattern for ecological community survey data

Margaret O'Brien et al.

Summary: The idea of harmonizing data has been around for decades, but faces challenges when dealing with studies where sampling protocols vary greatly and complex environmental conditions are involved. A collaborative approach with an environmental data repository and a national observatory is discussed to create a decentralized model for reformatting data without altering original data. This approach aims to contribute subsets of available data to different analysis-ready data preparation efforts while ensuring metadata retention and programmatic data access.
