Differential methylation of imprinting genes and MHC locus in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome-related schizophrenia spectrum disorders

Miri Carmel et al.

Summary: This study found that differential methylation in imprinting genes and in chr6p21-22 may play a role in the development of schizophrenia spectrum disorders in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. The enrichment of differentially methylated probes in imprinting genes and the MHC locus suggests a neurodevelopmental nature of 22q11.2DS-related schizophrenia and highlights the major role of the MHC locus in the risk to develop schizophrenia.

Detecting differentially methylated regions with multiple distinct associations

Samantha Lent et al.

Summary: This study evaluated five methods for detecting differentially methylated regions, finding several methods with inflated Type I error and dmrff consistently among the most powerful. It highlights the need for more thorough simulation studies to evaluate novel methods and develop approaches that do not require individual-level data.

DNA methylation differences associated with social anxiety disorder and early life adversity

Ariane Wiegand et al.

Summary: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by extensive fear in social situations, with early life adversity (ELA) and DNA methylation being identified as potential contributing factors. An epigenome-wide association study found differentially methylated regions (DMRs) associated with SAD and ELA, suggesting potential biological mechanisms underlying the disorders. Further research is needed to replicate these findings and explore the pathways involved.

Summary: DNA methylation is a commonly studied epigenetic mark due to its role in disease and development. Illumina methylation arrays are widely used for measuring methylation across the human genome. GOmeth and GOregion are new methods for unbiased gene set testing following differential methylation analysis.
