Reassessment of the homogenization of daily maximum temperatures in the Netherlands since 1901

Frans Dijkstra et al.

Summary: The Royal Dutch Meteorological Office homogenized daily temperature records for the Netherlands from 1901 to 1950 in 2016, finding that corrections in tropical days depend on the choice of reference station and period length, and the results for De Bilt may not be accurate.

Data rescue in selected countries in connection with the EUMETNET DARE activity

Barbara Chimani et al.

Summary: In situ data is essential for analyzing past and current climate change worldwide. Different data rescue activities are being carried out to extend existing time series and retrieve data in spatially and temporally sparse regions. The EUMETNET Data Rescue activity aims to investigate the potential for additional long-term stations, monitor data rescue progress in European countries, and support participants with know-how exchange and international connections to facilitate data exchange. Awareness on data rescue has been raised, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and providing insights into different strategies and ongoing activities.

Ukrainian early (pre-1850) historical weather observations

Oleg Skrynyk et al.

Summary: In this study, a climate data rescue (DARE) activity was carried out in cooperation with the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute, Justus Liebig University Giessen, the World Meteorological Organization, and Met Office Hadley Centre. The focus was on digitizing pre-1850 sub-daily meteorological observations in Ukraine, resulting in 291,103 rescued values. Quality control procedures showed good agreement between rescued time series and monthly data from independent sources, although caution is advised for some stations. The rescued database can be used for extreme value analysis, climatological studies, and future Reanalysis.

Efficiency of Time Series Homogenization: Method Comparison with 12 Monthly Temperature Test Datasets

Peter Domonkos et al.

Summary: The aim of time series homogenization is to reduce nonclimatic effects, and in this study, the efficiencies of automatic homogenization methods were tested on different datasets. The results show that a higher signal-to-noise ratio in datasets leads to better removal of nonclimatic biases.

The Assessment of Global Surface Temperature Change from 1850s: The C-LSAT2.0 Ensemble and the CMST-Interim Datasets

Wenbin Sun et al.

Summary: By reconstructing C-LSAT2.0 using high- and low-frequency components reconstruction methods, combined with observation constraint masking, an upgraded version of CMST-Interim dataset has been developed, improving global surface temperature data coverage. The global warming trend is further amplified, with global mean surface temperatures estimated to be cooler in the 19th century and warmer in the 21st century.

How much has the Sun influenced Northern Hemisphere temperature trends? An ongoing debate

Ronan Connolly et al.

Summary: By evaluating the influence of Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) on Northern Hemisphere surface air temperature trends, it was found that urbanization bias might still be a problem in current global temperature datasets. Different methods were used to estimate temperature trends, all confirming some degree of global warming since the late 19th century. The estimates ranged from suggesting mostly human-caused recent global warming to attributing most of the warming to changes in solar activity.

Combination of Using Pairwise Comparisons and Composite Reference Series: A New Approach in the Homogenization of Climatic Time Series with ACMANT

Peter Domonkos

Summary: Sophisticated statistical methods are needed to remove non-climatic biases from long climatic records. Different time series comparison methods, such as composite reference series and pairwise comparisons, can be used for homogenization. A new method, ACMANT, combines the advantages of both types of comparisons for more accurate regional trend estimations.
