Extreme precipitation events over northern Italy. Part II: Dynamical precursors

Federico Grazzini et al.

Summary: The study found that different categories of extreme precipitation events differ in terms of local meteorological conditions and the evolution and properties of precursor RWPs. The strongest EPEs are associated with substantial amplification over the western North Atlantic due to anomalous ridge-building, facilitating water vapor transport and the occurrence of extreme precipitation events in northern-central Italy.

A Climate-Mathematical Clustering of Rainfall Stations in the Rio Bravo-San Juan Basin (Mexico) by Using the Higuchi Fractal Dimension and the Hurst Exponent

Francisco Gerardo Benavides-Bravo et al.

Summary: This paper analyzed historical data from 17 weather stations in the Rio Bravo-San Juan Basin, Mexico, using the Higuchi fractal dimension and Hurst exponent. The results showed a better correlation between the climate of each station and the Higuchi fractal dimension compared to the Hurst exponent, indicating a relationship between aridity and rainfall persistency. These findings can help improve climatological models in the study region.

Exposure Assessment of Climate Extremes over the Europe-Mediterranean Region

Mehmet Baris Kelebek et al.

Summary: The study introduces a modified Climate Extremes Index (mCEI) to analyze climate change impacts in the Europe-Mediterranean region. Results show an increasing trend in warm temperature extremes, a decrease in cold temperature extremes, and a significant rise in extreme drought. Regional differences exist, but overall, extreme precipitation indexes tend to increase. Major hotspots for combined extremes are identified, with certain cities showing a high increasing trend in mCEI.

Multitemporal Landslide Inventory and Activity Analysis by Means of Aerial Photogrammetry and LiDAR Techniques in an Area of Southern Spain

Tomas Fernandez et al.

Summary: This paper utilizes aerial photogrammetry and LiDAR techniques to analyze landslide activity in an area near Jaen, Southern Spain over a 32-year period. By processing data and combining photointerpretation, multiple types of landslides were identified, and different periods of activity were related to rainy events and dry years.

Preliminary Forecasting of Rainfall-Induced Shallow Landslides in the Wildfire Burned Areas of Western Greece

Spyridon Lainas et al.

Summary: A new methodology for forecasting shallow landslides in wildfire burned areas is proposed by estimating the annual probability of rainfall threshold exceedance based on geological fieldwork and statistical analyses. The study concludes that the annual exceedance probability of rainfall-induced landslides in burned areas is higher when cumulative rainfall duration ranges from 6 to 9 days, with local differences due to geological conditions and landscape characteristics.

Flash Flood Events along the West Mediterranean Coasts: Inundations of Urbanized Areas Conditioned by Anthropic Impacts

Francesco Faccini et al.

Summary: Flash floods are a major natural hazard in the Mediterranean area, causing significant damage and loss of life. Urban expansion in fluvial areas and climate change have contributed to an increase in flood frequency. Vulnerability of elements at risk in coastal plains and anthropogenic forcings have also played a role in exacerbating risk conditions.
