Urban Heat Island and Its Interaction with Heatwaves: A Review of Studies on Mesoscale

Jing Kong et al.

Summary: With rapid urbanization and increased anthropogenic activities, more major cities worldwide are experiencing severe urban heat islands, which can cause complex impacts on the urban environment and public health, especially during heatwaves. Research indicates that urban areas are more vulnerable than rural areas during heatwaves, but certain studies show the opposite. Increasing albedo, vegetation fraction, and irrigation are found to lower urban temperatures during heatwaves.

The sensitivity of simulated surface-level pollution concentrations to WRF-ARW-model PBL parameterisation schemes over the Highveld of South Africa

Anzel de Lange et al.

Summary: This study reveals sensitivity of air pollution modeling to different planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes in numerical weather prediction models. Local closure schemes MYJ and MYNN often perform well, while non-local closure schemes YSU and ACM are less frequently identified as best-performing schemes.
