The impact of organic carbon on soot light absorption

Georgios A. Kelesidis et al.

Summary: The study uses discrete element modeling and the discrete dipole approximation to investigate the impact of organic carbon on light absorption of soot particles. It reveals that the morphology, maturity, and OC content of soot greatly influence its light absorption.

Shipping Remains a Globally Significant Source of Anthropogenic PN Emissions Even after 2020 Sulfur Regulation

Niina Kuittinen et al.

Summary: Shipping is a major source of anthropogenic particle emissions globally, with significant impacts on climate, air quality, and human health. Most particles in ship engine exhaust are in the ultrafine particle size range, with emissions being localized near coastal lines and also present in open seas.

Variation of Absorption Angstrom Exponent in Aerosols From Different Emission Sources

A. Helin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the variation of AAE in fresh aerosol emissions from different fuel and combustion types. Results showed significant differences in AAE values among emission sources, with high sulfur heavy oil leading to higher AAE in ship engine emissions, and acceleration resulting in lower AAE in diesel bus emissions.

Modeled source apportionment of black carbon particles coated with a light-scattering shell

Aki Virkkula

Summary: The Aethalometer model is widely used for estimating contributions of fossil fuel emissions and biomass burning to equivalent black carbon absorption, with uncertainties in interpretation due to particle size, internal structure, and other factors. Evaluating the uncertainties in apparent fractions of absorption by eBC from fossil fuel and biomass burning revealed the significant impact of size distribution on absorption.
