Time-resolved characterization of organic compounds in PM2.5 collected at Oki Island, Japan, affected by transboundary pollution of biomass and non-biomass burning from Northeast China

Fumikazu Ikemori et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Oki Island, Japan, showed that transboundary pollution of organic aerosols from Northeast Asia significantly impacts the chemical compositions and characterization of organic aerosols in downwind regions of Northeast China.

Low molecular weight dicarboxylic acids, oxocarboxylic acids and α-dicarbonyls as ozonolysis products of isoprene: Implication for the gaseous-phase formation of secondary organic aerosols

Srinivas Bikkina et al.

Summary: Oxidation of isoprene can lead to the production of oxalic acid, with methylglyoxal identified as an important intermediate. The relative abundances of methylglyoxal and oxalic acid fluctuate significantly during the reaction, suggesting a complex pathway of oxalic acid formation under dry conditions. The study proposes new reaction schemes for interpreting the ambient SOA composition and highlights the stable character of C-2 towards oxidation by hydroxyl radicals.

Rapid production of highly oxidized molecules in isoprene aerosol via peroxy and alkoxy radical isomerization pathways in low and high NOx environments: Combined laboratory, computational and field studies

Mohammed Jaoui et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence that methyltartaric acids (MTA) are reliable tracers of isoprene aerosol and are likely produced through rapid hydrogen atom shift reactions. It was also found that MTA have been widely present in ambient aerosol samples over the past 20 years and show a seasonal trend consistent with isoprene emissions and photochemical activity in field studies.

Chemical Composition of Gas and Particle Phase Products of Toluene Photooxidation Reaction under High OH Exposure Condition

Yik-Sze Lau et al.

Summary: The study investigated the photooxidation reaction of toluene in a PAM OFR and analyzed the gas-phase products and particle changes using PTR-MS and SMPS. The results identified key gas-phase reaction products of toluene and detected second generation products, with minimal effects of OH exposure and RH on product composition. Off-line analysis of SOA samples revealed the presence of various diacids, including some compounds not previously identified in toluene photooxidation experiments.

Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from Isoprene: Selected Research, Historic Account and State of the Art

Magda Claeys et al.

Summary: This review covers research on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from isoprene over the past two decades, highlighting the complex pathways and source apportionment. The importance of molecular characterization and mass spectrometric techniques in understanding the formation mechanisms is emphasized. Efforts to distinguish different sources of SOA, including isoprene SOA, using organic marker-based methods and positive matrix factorization are examined.

Source contributions to multiple toxic potentials of atmospheric organic aerosols

Akihiro Fushimi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated source contributions to the toxic potentials of organic aerosols in the atmosphere by conducting chemical and biological assays, revealing significant differences in contributions among sources. Urban and roadside samples showed stronger toxic potentials per organic carbon, while remote samples in summer had weaker toxic potentials, indicating that atmospheric aging decreased toxicity. Samples from forest and biogenic secondary organic aerosols exhibited relatively low toxic potentials, suggesting lower toxicity of biogenic particles.
