Improved estimation of trends in US ozone concentrations adjusted for interannual variability in meteorological conditions

Benjamin Wells et al.

Summary: The study has made improvements to the method of adjusting O3 concentration trends for meteorological influences by refining input data sources and allowing the statistical model to vary locally. The use of quantile regression to adjust trends in peak O3 concentrations provides a better understanding of the effects of local meteorology on O3 levels.

Understanding the Trend of NO2, SO2 and CO over East Africa from 2005 to 2020

Ronald Opio et al.

Summary: This study used satellite observations to investigate the trends of nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide in the East African region, identifying seasonal fires in savanna woodlands and urban areas as major sources of pollution. The study found no trend in nitrogen dioxide, a decreasing trend in sulfur dioxide, and varying trends in carbon monoxide at different altitudes in the atmosphere.

Spatiotemporal variation of surface ozone and its causes in Beijing, China since 2014

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: The study revealed the spatiotemporal distribution and variations of surface ozone in Beijing from 2014 to 2020. The maximum ozone concentrations decreased slightly, but some monitoring sites in urban and suburban areas showed significant positive trends. The high ozone value areas shifted from the northern suburbs to the northeastern and southwestern suburbs and the east of the central urban area.

Volatile chemical product emissions enhance ozone and modulate urban chemistry

Matthew M. Coggon et al.

Summary: Decades of air quality improvements have reduced motor vehicle emissions, with VCPs now responsible for half of petrochemical VOCs in major urban areas. VCP emissions are widespread in US and European cities, impacting air quality, as illustrated by significant emissions in New York City. The study shows that VCP emissions, especially fragranced VCPs, have a significant impact on ozone levels in urban areas.

Observed Relationship between Ozone and Temperature for Urban Nonattainment Areas in the United States

Matthew Ninneman et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between ozone (O-3) and temperature in 20 cities across the United States from 1995 to 2020. The study found that the correlation between O-3 and temperature has decreased in the eastern and midwestern U.S. due to emission controls, while in the western U.S., O-3 concentrations have declined more slowly because of high background O-3 and wildfire smoke. This suggests that meeting the O-3 National Ambient Air Quality Standard in the western U.S. will be more challenging compared to other regions.
