Long period grating in double cladding fiber coated with graphene oxide as high-performance optical platform for biosensing

Flavio Esposito et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel fiber-optic biosensor was developed and tested for label-free detection of C-reactive protein in serum. The device showed enhanced sensitivity and visibility of grating resonances by tuning the working point to the mode transition region through etching of the outer fiber cladding. Coating the fiber transducer with graphene oxide enabled covalent immobilization of the biological recognition element, resulting in a low detection limit and a wide working range of clinical relevance.

Simultaneous Sensing of Refractive Index and Temperature With Supermode Interference

Jose A. Flores-Bravo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that a single supermode interferometer can monitor two parameters simultaneously by utilizing strongly coupled multicore fiber and standard single mode fiber. The reflection spectrum of the interferometer changes with refractive index and temperature, allowing for easy decoding of interference patterns in the Fourier domain. An important advantage of this device is that the length of the multicore fiber does not affect sensor performance, and the device can be reused multiple times.

Sondos Abdullah Alqarni et al.

Summary: Localized hyperthermia therapy involves heating a small volume of tissue to kill cancer cells selectively. A new optical fiber-based active heater is introduced in this study, acting as both a heat source and a thermometer. Ultrashort pulse written fiber Bragg gratings as narrowband filters in multicore fibers

T. A. Goebel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the inscription of narrow-linewidth fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) into different types of multicore fibers (MCFs) using ultrashort laser pulses and the phase mask technique, serving as notch filters to suppress disturbance from hydroxyl emissions in the Earth's upper atmosphere on ground-based observation of extraterrestrial objects. Two solutions are proposed to address the issue of large core-to-core deviation in resonance wavelength, including photo-treatment of FBGs and fabrication of adapted MCFs with 12 cores arranged in a circle. Both solutions achieved significant improvements in core-to-core wavelength variations of the FBGs, meeting the requirements for astronomical filter applications.
