Host responses to implants revealed by intravital microscopy

Eleonora Dondossola et al.

Summary: This review discusses how intravital microscopy can be used to assess the mechanisms underlying regenerative and pathological responses to implants, including wound healing and graft integration, which depend on the activation of macrophages and neovascularization. Improved materials designs, detection of cell signaling using molecular reporters and targeted intervention can help develop strategies to improve graft integration and functionality. Understanding and intervening in the physiological and pathological responses to implants can lead to better outcomes in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

A Two-Photon Microimaging-Microdevice System for Four-Dimensional Imaging of Local Drug Delivery in Tissues

Guigen Liu et al.

Summary: Advancements in intratumor drug response measurements involve combining high throughput drug screening microdevices and fluorescence micro-endoscopes to monitor tissue responses in tumors. The new system integrates intratumor drug release with continuous 3D spatial imaging to effectively profile the tumor region and successfully demonstrates four-dimensional imaging of local drug delivery.

Low-autofluorescence, transparent composite for multiphoton 3D printing

George Flamourakis et al.

Summary: Multiphoton lithography offers the potential for high-resolution, free-form 3D printing of micro-optical elements and tissue engineering scaffolds, but material and structure autofluorescence present a major challenge. This study demonstrates the use of Sudan Black B as both a photoinitiator and post-fabrication treatment to create a non-fluorescent composite for producing high-quality microstructures.

A Miniaturized Platform for Multiplexed Drug Response Imaging in Live Tumors

Sharath Bhagavatula et al.

Summary: The developed implantable microdevice allows direct imaging of cell death induced by chemotherapy drugs in live tumors, potentially optimizing personalized cancer treatment strategies within hours. This technology avoids the need for surgical tissue removal or prolonged trials of ineffective chemotherapies. It offers the potential for a more comprehensive understanding of drug response in tumors and could be applied in settings where surgery is not feasible.
