Interplay of vibrational wavepackets during an ultrafast electron transfer reaction

Shahnawaz Rafiq et al.

Summary: Research has shown that controlling molecular vibrations can accelerate certain electron transfer reactions and determine the process in which vibrations participate in the reaction. Experiments have observed ballistic electron transfer along a reaction coordinate with high-frequency promoting vibrations, as well as the system becoming impulsively out of equilibrium due to the electron transfer reaction.

Excited-state vibration-polariton transitions and dynamics in nitroprusside

Andrea B. Grafton et al.

Summary: The study observed the spectroscopic signatures and relaxation dynamics of vibration-polaritons formed from the NO band of nitroprusside, using a quantum model to explain the results. The decay of polariton features was found to be slower, indicating their partial incoherent population characteristics.

Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction in 10B Monoisotopic Boron Nitride Infrared Nanoresonators

Marta Autore et al.

Summary: Phonon-polaritons, emerging as a powerful platform for nanophotonic applications, can concentrate light into extreme sub-wavelength scales and have longer phonon lifetimes compared to plasmonic counterparts. By using monoisotopic B-10 hexagonal boron nitride, nanoresonators with increased quality factors are obtained, allowing for the sensing of nanometric-thick films of molecules. Additionally, strong coupling between molecular vibrations and phonon-polariton resonance can be achieved even in monoisotopic h-BN ribbons.

Angle-independent plasmonic substrates for multi-mode vibrational strong coupling with molecular thin films

Zachary T. Brawley et al.

Summary: The vibrational strong coupling of molecules to optical cavities based on plasmonic resonances has been explored recently due to the ability of plasmonic near-fields to provide strong coupling in sub-diffraction limited volumes. This work demonstrates an angle-independent plasmonic nanodisk substrate that overcomes limitations of traditional optical cavities and allows for strong coupling with all molecules on the surface, regardless of molecular orientation. The large linewidths of the plasmon resonance enable simultaneous strong coupling to two orthogonal water vibrational modes, with the Rabi splitting varying as a function of plasmon frequency and strong coupling achieved for a range of diameters.

Light-matter interaction of a molecule in a dissipative cavity from first principles

Derek S. Wang et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully described the coupled cavity-single molecule interactions in the weak-to-strong-coupling regimes by generalizing quantum-electrodynamical density functional theory to account for dissipative dynamics of the cavity. By tuning the coupling, cavity-mediated energy transfer between electronically excited states has been achieved. This generalized ab initio quantum-electrodynamical density functional theory treatment can be extended to describe cavity-mediated interactions in arbitrary electromagnetic environments, bridging the gap between electronic structure theory, quantum optics, and nanophotonics.

Cavity frequency-dependent theory for vibrational polariton chemistry

Xinyang Li et al.

Summary: Recent experiments show that coupling molecules inside an optical microcavity can control chemical reactivities, specifically through the mechanism of vibrational strong coupling. The modification of chemical reactivities in VSC polariton chemistry, dependent on photon frequency, can be explained by non-Markovian dynamics and the dynamic caging effect of the reaction coordinate. This study sheds light on the suppression of reaction rates for a specific cavity frequency, reminiscent of a solvent caging effect.

Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction and Polariton Relaxation by the Control of Molecular Orientation

Tomohiro Ishii et al.

Summary: By controlling the orientation of organic molecules, the interaction between excitons and photons can be significantly enhanced, leading to a reduction in the condensation threshold of polariton BECs. This provides a promising strategy for realizing low-threshold polariton BEC systems and electrically driven polariton BECs.
