Broadband Liquid Crystal Tunable Metasurfaces in the Visible: Liquid Crystal Inhomogeneities Across the Metasurface Parameter Space

James A. Dolan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive study of all-dielectric liquid crystal tunable metasurfaces operating in the visible spectrum. By combining experimental characterization, liquid crystal modeling, and optical simulations, the improved accuracy in describing the optical properties of liquid crystal tunable metasurfaces is revealed, with the underlying physical mechanism identified as the three-dimensional spatial overlap of the liquid crystal director field and metasurface optical near fields near the meta-atoms.

Electrically Actuated Varifocal Lens Based on Liquid-Crystal-Embedded Dielectric Metasurfaces

Melissa Bosch et al.

Summary: An ultrathin electrically controlled varifocal lens based on liquid crystal encapsulated dielectric metasurfaces is capable of continuous zoom and up to 20% total focal shift. The concept of LC-based metalens is experimentally verified through the design and fabrication of a bifocal metalens, allowing high-contrast switching between two discrete focal lengths upon application of a voltage bias. Due to their ultrathin thickness and adaptable design, LC-driven dielectric metasurfaces offer new opportunities for compact varifocal lensing in a variety of modern imaging applications.

Electrically Tunable Optical Metasurfaces for Dynamic Polarization Conversion

Ping Yu et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the use of liquid crystals as a thin surrounding medium for electrically tunable optical metasurfaces, achieving rapid and reversible polarization rotation of linearly polarized light at visible frequencies. By controlling both the geometric and propagation phase tuning capabilities, flexible control over the polarization angle is achieved.

Multiresponsive Dielectric Metasurfaces

Chengjun Zou et al.

Summary: The study introduces the concept of multiresponsive metasurfaces and demonstrates that the simultaneous application of two or more external stimuli can expand the functionality of metasurface-based devices. By combining electrical and thermal tunability, new functionalities such as tuning the modulation depths, nearly polarization-independent tuning, and gated response have been achieved.
