Structure-properties relationships in alkaline treated rice husk reinforced thermoplastic cassava starch biocomposites

Phetdaphat Boonsuk et al.

Summary: The study investigated the structure-properties relationships in thermoplastic cassava starch (TPS) based biocomposites with untreated and treated rice husk (RH) at different weight percentages. Alkaline treatment of RH improved filler-matrix interactions and surface properties, leading to enhanced tensile strength of the biocomposites. However, high water absorption was observed in biocomposites with 15 wt% treated RH, while all biocomposites showed high biodegradation rates and slightly decreased thermal stability. These composites exhibit promising properties for absorbent applications.

Cellulose-Based Hybrid Structural Material for Radiative Cooling

Yipeng Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-performance and inexpensive cooling structural material was developed by assembling delignified biomass cellulose fiber and inorganic microspheres. The material exhibited strong mechanical strength, excellent cooling properties, fire-retardant characteristics, and outdoor antibacterial performance, making it a promising candidate for high-performance cooling structural materials.

Influence of steam explosion pre-treatment conditions on binder-less boards from hemp shives and wheat straw

Ramunas Tupciauskas et al.

Summary: Non-catalysed steam explosion pre-treatment was used to valorise agricultural residues of hemp shives and wheat straw, producing fibre bundles with self-bonding property. The SE severity significantly influenced particle size and cellulose DP, while SE temperature and time both played a significant role in improving the properties of the binder-less boards, particularly enhancing water absorption and internal bonding strength. Hemp varieties exhibited differences in the properties of the binder-less boards, with Uso31 being the most suitable variety.
