Southern hemisphere tropical cyclones: A critical analysis of regional characteristics

Micheal T. Pillay et al.

Summary: Tropical cyclones pose a greater risk and impact on southern hemisphere countries compared to the northern hemisphere due to lower adaptive capacity. Differences between hemispheric storm activities include seasonality, storm number, and the latitudinal position at which storms form and intensify. Higher sea surface temperatures are a major factor associated with increased intensity and lifetime of tropical cyclones in the southern hemisphere.

Prediction and precursors ofIdaiand 38 other tropical cyclones and storms in the Mozambique Channel

Erik W. Kolstad

Summary: Studies have shown that predicting the paths and strengths of tropical storms and cyclones is challenging, but the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ensemble prediction model can successfully predict certain precursors, such as anomalies in sea-level pressure, at longer lead times.

Impacts of the Tropical Cyclone Idai in Mozambique: A Multi-Temporal Landsat Satellite Imagery Analysis

Alberto Bento Charrua et al.

Summary: This study analyzed temporal changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) across Sofala Province in Mozambique using Landsat satellite images before and after Cyclone Idai. The results showed that the most devastated areas were in the Northeastern, Central, and Southern regions, with dense vegetation being the most affected. The study also suggested that vegetation type might influence the degree of damage to LULC.

Synoptic structure of a sub-daily extreme precipitation and flood event in Thohoyandou, north-eastern South Africa

Hector Chikoore et al.

Summary: The extreme sub-daily precipitation event in Thohoyandou, South Africa was caused by a combination of mid-tropospheric tropical-temperate trough and cloud band plus surface high ridging. Heavy rainfall was widespread, but extreme amounts were localized due to a cloudburst and small perturbations in the environment. Steepened pressure gradient and increased moisture fluxes from the Southwest Indian Ocean, along with interactions of surface winds and topography, contributed to the heavy rainfall and flooding.

Sensitivity of Tropical Cyclone Idai Simulations to Cumulus Parametrization Schemes

Mary-Jane M. Bopape et al.

Summary: The study shows that scale-aware schemes in tropical cyclone simulations help the model resolve most dynamics and result in higher weather system intensity. However, differences in predicting the path of Idai were found among different parameterization schemes.

Sources of climate change information used by newspaper journalists in Tanzania

Peter Onauphoo Siyao et al.

Summary: This article assesses the information sources used by Tanzanian newspaper journalists to collect climate change information, highlighting the main sources consulted and potential challenges faced. Findings suggest that while climate change experts and daily events are key sources of information, underutilization of other potential sources may impact the quality and quantity of climate change information published in Tanzanian newspapers. Collaboration and capacity-building strategies are suggested for stakeholders and journalism colleges to enhance the work of newspaper journalists, editors, and reporters in addressing climate change issues effectively.

Summary: This study analyzed the impacts of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique using Sentinel-2 imagery and remote sensing techniques, showing that 61% of the study area was affected by floods. After the cyclone, the area under water reduced by more than 20%.
