A multi-isotopic evaluation of groundwater in a rapidly developing area and implications for water management in hyper-arid regions

Juan Jose Gomez-Alday et al.

Summary: The management of water resources in hyper-arid areas faces significant challenges in the context of global climate change. Stable isotopes were used as tools in this study to evaluate groundwater sources and quality in the United Arab Emirates, indicating an increase in groundwater salinity and the impact of ancient groundwater sources.

Groundwater Recharge Assessment Using Multi Component Analysis: Case Study at the NW Edge of the Varazdin Alluvial Aquifer, Croatia

Igor Karlovic et al.

Summary: This study explores the interaction between precipitation, surface water, and groundwater, and emphasizes the importance of proper management and preservation of groundwater quality. The results show that surface water is a key mechanism of groundwater recharge in the study area, with a contribution ratio ranging from 55% to 100% depending on the proximity of the observation well to surface water.

Recharge environment and hydrogeochemical processes of groundwater in a crystalline aquifer in South India

P. D. Sreedevi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that groundwater recharge in semi-arid regions is influenced by multiple components rather than just direct precipitation, with stable isotopic concentrations varying with seasons and rainfall. Sodium-chloride is the dominant water type during the dry season, while calcium-sodium-bicarbonate prevails during the wet season.

Geochemical evolution and tracing of groundwater salinization using different ionic ratios, multivariate statistical and geochemical modeling approaches in a typical semi-arid basin

Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using different ionic ratios, multivariate statistical, and geochemical modeling approaches to understand groundwater evolution and trace salinization in semi-arid basin aquifers. Groundwater chemistry is primarily controlled by water-rock interaction, ion exchange reactions, weathering, salinization, and anthropogenic activities. The prevalence of salinization in the aquifer system, especially in the southwestern part of the basin, is revealed through different ionic ratio plots and spatial distribution maps.

Isotopes (618O,6D and 3H) variations in groundwater with emphasis on salinization in the state of Punjab, India

Gopal Krishan et al.

Summary: Punjab's agrarian economy is facing challenges due to falling groundwater levels and deteriorating groundwater quality, with increasing salinity being a major concern. Irrigation needs are met by groundwater and canal water, but canal irrigation has led to waterlogging and subsequent salinization, rendering fertile land unproductive in the south-western part of Punjab. Further research is being done to understand the dynamics of groundwater recharge and the effects of evaporation on salinity levels.

Integrated multi-criteria analysis for groundwater potential mapping in Precambrian hard rock terranes (North Gujarat), India

Rudra Mohan Pradhan et al.

Summary: The study successfully mapped the groundwater potential zones in water-scarce areas of North Gujarat using integrated multi-criteria analysis, showing that very high and high groundwater potentials cover areas of 4.29% and 12.86% respectively. Validation using the kappa index method demonstrated high accuracies of 83.3% for very high, 85.7% for high, and 90.1% for moderate groundwater potential zones. This indicates that such integrated analysis is reliable and effective for groundwater prospecting and management in similar setups.

Hydrogeochemical evolution and groundwater recharge processes in arsenic enriched area in central Gangetic plain, India

Sumant Kumar et al.

Summary: The study in the central Gangetic plain of India focused on hydrogeochemical evolution, distribution, fate and spatio-temporal variation of arsenic. The results showed that the arsenic enriched area was mostly in the younger alluvium, groundwater recharge rate varied greatly, and arsenic concentration differed across seasons.

Impact of geology and anthropogenic activities over the water quality with emphasis on fluoride in water scarce Lalitpur district of Bundelkhand region, India

Neeraj Pant et al.

Summary: A study in the Bundelkhand region of India revealed that groundwater quality is influenced by rock weathering and anthropogenic activities, with fluoride concentration having a greater impact on infants and children. The origin of groundwater is local precipitation with evaporative enrichment, and variations in ion concentration along groundwater flow direction indicate control by hydrogeological attributes.

Use of stable water isotopes to identify and estimate the sources of groundwater recharge in an alluvial aquifer of Upper Jhelum Basin (UJB), western Himalayas

Ghulam Jeelani et al.

Summary: The study revealed that snowmelt predominantly recharges groundwater, while glacier melt also contributes to groundwater recharge to some extent, particularly in summer and autumn months. The attenuation in the isotopic signal of groundwater may be due to the mixing of different waters recharging from different altitudes.
