Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Street Sweepings

Atiye Ahmadireskety et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 117 street sweeping samples for PFAS, with 56 samples collected from Gainesville, Florida. PFCAs were the dominant class of PFAS in Gainesville, and PFOA and PFOSlin were the most frequently detected PFAS. Additionally, this study documented the first-time detection of hexadecafluorosebacic acid and perfluoro-3,6,9-trioxaundecane-1,11-dioic acid within environmental samples.

Road Runoff Characterization: Ecotoxicological Assessment Combined with (Non-)Target Screenings of Micropollutants for the Identification of Relevant Toxicants in the Dissolved Phase

Fidji Sandre et al.

Summary: Road runoff is a significant source of micropollutants that can contaminate groundwater and soils, posing a threat to the environment and ecosystems. This study investigated the specific toxicants present in road runoff from two sites with different traffic intensities and conducted a toxicological risk assessment. The findings emphasize the unpredictability of the cocktail effect of pollutants and the importance of a multi-approaches strategy for characterizing environmental matrices.

A ubiquitous tire rubber-derived chemical induces acute mortality in coho salmon

Zhenyu Tian et al.

Summary: Research on coho salmon in the U.S. Pacific Northwest revealed unexpected risks of a highly toxic quinone transformation product of the tire rubber antioxidant 6PPD. This implies toxicological relevance for burned-off tire rubber residues to aquatic species.

Micropollutants in Urban Stormwater Runoff of Different Land Uses

Daniel Wicke et al.

Summary: The study surveyed micropollutants in stormwater runoff in Berlin, Germany, and found significant differences in pollutant concentrations among different urban land-use types. Results showed that land use types have a significant impact on the pollutant concentrations in stormwater runoff.

Occurrences of Tire Rubber-Derived Contaminants in Cold-Climate Urban Runoff

J. K. Challis et al.

Summary: Recent findings show that 6PPD-quinone, a transformation product of a common tire rubber antioxidant, is acutely toxic in stormwater-impacted streams. This study in Saskatoon, Canada detected 6PPD-quinone and other tire rubber-derived compounds in stormwater and snowmelt, with DPG being the most abundant. High concentrations of DPG and 6PPD-quinone were found and correlated with roads and residential land-use area.
