Insight of bacteria and archaea in Feammox community enriched from different soils

Jiaxuan Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that Feammox activity is associated with an increased abundance of iron-reducing bacteria, while the Paddy Group had a shorter lag period than the Mine Group. Ammonium-oxidizing archaea and methanogens dominated among the known archaea.

Feammox process driven anaerobic ammonium removal of wastewater treatment under supplementing Fe(III) compounds

Ting-ting Zhu et al.

Summary: The Feammox process plays a crucial role in the natural nitrogen cycle, but has been rarely investigated in the field of wastewater treatment. This study explored the potential of anaerobic ammonium removal coupled with organics to assess the Feammox process for conventional wastewater treatment. Results showed that the Fe2O3 group had the highest efficiency in ammonium removal, while organics significantly inhibited the Feammox process.

Fe(III)-mediated anaerobic ammonium oxidation: A novel microbial nitrogen cycle pathway and potential applications

Xin Tan et al.

Summary: Feammox is a novel pathway for ammonium (NH4 (+)) oxidation and nitrogen cycle, leading to significant loss of nitrogen in natural environments. Various Feammox pathways, end products, and interactions within microbial communities have been revealed by researchers, offering alternative processes for wastewater treatment. However, substantial variations exist among different studies in terms of key functional microorganisms.

Electrostimulation enhanced ammonium removal during Fe(III) reduction coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox) process

Ting-ting Zhu et al.

Summary: The study shows that microbial electricity coupled with Fe(III) reduction can enhance anaerobic ammonium removal, possibly through the enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria and the generation of nitrite from the Feammox process. The synergistic effect of BES and Feammox process may improve the reaction process and microorganisms, leading to a more efficient ammonium removal process.

Summary: This study investigated a process of ammonium oxidation under ferric-iron reducing condition (feammox) in a laboratory-scaled system, showing high removal efficiencies for NH4+ and COD under specific conditions. It also revealed that gamma-proteobacteria dominated in the microbial community attached to the system matrix bed.

A promising destiny for Feammox: From biogeochemical ammonium oxidation to wastewater treatment

Jiaxuan Zhu et al.

Summary: Ammonium is a common form of nitrogen in wastewater, and new technologies are needed to effectively remove it to prevent severe pollution. Feammox, known as anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to Fe(III) reduction, is an efficient and environmentally friendly method that can be combined with other nitrogen removal reactions for wastewater treatment.
