Investigating the less ambiguous hydrogeophysical method in exploring the shallow coastal stratified-saline aquifer: a case study at West Port Said Coast, Egypt

Mohamed Abdelfattah et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the best hydro-geophysical method for exploring the coastal aquifer in the west Port Said study area. Through vertical electrical sounding (VES) and transient electromagnetic (TEM) measurements of groundwater resources, the results showed that the TEM method is more reliable than VES in such coastal environments, as it provides deeper depth and clearer delineation of subsurface conductive layers.

Effects of groundwater abstraction and desalination brine deep injection on a coastal aquifer

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: Due to climate change, population increase and improvement of living standards, the global attention on seawater desalination is growing. However, the brine produced during desalination process has detrimental effects on the environment, especially on coastal aquifers and marine ecosystems. By reducing the water concentration feeding the reverse osmosis plant, salinization of the coastal aquifer can be mitigated, leading to decreased energy consumption in the desalination process.

Management of saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers using different wells systems: a case study of the Nile Delta aquifer in Egypt

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: A study in the Nile Delta aquifer found that a combined well system of pumping, recharge and abstraction is more effective in controlling saltwater intrusion compared to individual measures. Increasing recharge was shown to have a greater impact on slowing down saltwater intrusion, with a retardation percentage of 19.5% compared to decreasing pumping at 6.2% and abstraction of brackish water at 5.9%.

Analytical Solution of Saltwater Intrusion in Costal Aquifers Considering Climate Changes and Different Boundary Conditions

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: Groundwater contamination caused by saltwater intrusion has a significant impact on freshwater quality. This study developed an analytical solution to investigate this phenomenon and compared the results with numerical models in different scenarios related to sea-level rise, recharge reduction, over pumping, and their combination. The analytical solution showed good agreement with numerical results, indicating its potential for similar studies with time and resource constraints.

An Open Source Approach for Near-Real Time Mapping of Oil Spills along the Mediterranean Coast of Egypt

Islam Abou El-Magd et al.

Summary: Oil pollution is a major threat to Egypt's marine environment, particularly near the Suez Canal and Port Said, due to heavy shipping traffic and oil production. This study developed an open-source model using Sentinel-1 SAR data to monitor oil pollution in real-time, detecting approximately 218 pollution cases between 2014 and 2020, with a concentration near the entrance of Suez Canal and city of Port Said.

Assessing the Impact of Lining Polluted Streams on Groundwater Quality: A Case Study of the Eastern Nile Delta Aquifer, Egypt

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: Groundwater is an important water source for many regions around the world, but drainage systems can impact its quality. This study evaluated the impact of the Bahr El Baqar drain system on groundwater quality in the Eastern Nile Delta, Egypt, using numerical modeling and simulation methods. The results showed that increasing abstraction rates and using lining materials for drains could respectively increase or decrease Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the aquifer, highlighting the importance of proper management practices to protect groundwater quality.
