A new species group from the Daphnia curvirostris species complex (Cladocera: Anomopoda) from the eastern Palaearctic: taxonomy, phylogeny and phylogeography

Alexey A. Kotov et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phylogeography, rates of evolution, and taxonomic status of different clades within the Daphnia curvirostris complex, revealing an eastern Palaearctic clade with at least four species having diagnostic morphological characters. Convergent morphological characters were also detected within the complex, providing insights into species boundaries. Divergence time estimates suggested an ancient origin for the Daphnia korovchinskyi group, but were complicated by the limited number of calibration points.

Lineage diversity and gene introgression in freshwater cladoceran crustaceans of theChydorus sphaericusspecies complex

Jinhui Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the lineage diversity and phylogeography of the Chydorus sphaericus species complex in China, revealing three distinct lineages with clear geographical separation. Different populations of C. sphaericus exhibited the ability to disperse over long distances, with several lineages and haplotypes being widespread in Eurasia. The study also found evidence of interspecific hybridization and gene introgression within the species complex, as indicated by discordance between mitochondrial DNA and nuclear phylogenies.

Unexpected mitochondrial lineage diversity within the genus Alonella Sars, 1862 (Crustacea: Cladocera) across the Northern Hemisphere

Anna N. Neretina et al.

Summary: Representatives of the genus Alonella Sars are some of the smallest known water fleas, with poorly studied diversity. Genetic analysis revealed at least twelve divergent phylogenetic lineages, indicating a higher potential species diversity than traditionally accepted. This genetic data provides a background for further morphological analyses and detailed phylogeographical studies.

The rapid, mass invasion of New Zealand by North American Daphnia pulex

Zhiqiang Ye et al.

Summary: Nonindigenous members of the Daphnia pulex complex have been found in many lakes in New Zealand in the past 20 years, originating from single asexual clones with the South Island populations identified as Daphnia pulicaria Forbes and North Island populations as hybrids of D. pulicaria Forbes and D. cf. pulex sensu Hebert. The invasive Daphnia in both islands are phylogenetically clustered with North American Daphnia, suggesting a North American origin. The South Island clones have identical mitochondrial genomes, indicating a single founder clone which is an obligate asexual, with a colonization time estimated to be around 60 years ago.

Bosminopsis deitersi (Crustacea: Cladocera) as an ancient species group: a revision

Petr G. Garibian et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the species Bosminopsis deitersi actually includes a cryptic species widely distributed in the Old World called Bosminopsis zernowi, with significant genetic divergence between the two. Samples indicated low genetic differentiation in Bosminopsis zernowi, and molecular clock and biogeographic analysis suggested a Mesozoic origin for this species group. This evidence contradicts the single species hypothesis for Bosminopsis deitersi and supports the existence of an ancient species group with marked morphological conservation.

Genetic Signature of a Past Anthropogenic Transportation of a Far-Eastern Endemic Cladoceran (Crustacea: Daphniidae) to the Volga Basin

Dmitry P. Karabanov et al.

Summary: Studies have identified a population in the Volga basin that contains hybrids of D. curvirostris and D. korovchinskyi, with the exact hybrid system still unknown and requiring further investigation. This discovery highlights the importance of accurate studies in revealing cryptic interspecific invasions, with expectations for rapid growth in the number of revealed cases in the future.
