Higher abundance of core antimicrobial resistant genes in effluent from wastewater treatment plants

Shahbaz Raza et al.

Summary: The study identified the persistent core resistome in urban wastewater treatment plants, showing that current technologies are unable to completely remove antimicrobial resistant bacteria and genes. The study highlighted the presence of key antibiotic resistant genes in both influent and effluent samples, especially in opportunistic pathogens such as Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Further research is needed to address the public health concern of the environmental dissemination of antibiotic resistant genes by wastewater treatment plants.

Effects of different defective linkers on the photocatalytic properties of Cu-BTC for overall water decomposition

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a synthesis strategy to construct defect structure and mixed valence coordinated unsaturated sites in Cu-BTC framework by using different defective linkers with increasing pKa value. The pKa value of defective linkers was found to be inversely proportional to the defect concentration and Cu1+/Cu2+ CUS content. The introduction of defect structure significantly improved specific surface area, light absorption, bandgap, and charge carrier separation rate of Cu-BTC samples, making them excellent bifunctional water splitting catalysts.

Modification of Ceramic Membranes with Carbon Compounds for Pharmaceutical Substances Removal from Water in a Filtration-Adsorption System

Daniel Polak et al.

Summary: The aim of this research is to develop a new type of carbon-ceramic membranes for the removal of pharmaceutical substances from water. The membranes, modified by chemical methods, showed improved adsorption properties and filtration properties, with membranes modified with MWCNT exhibiting a high removal rate of tetracycline and permeate flux. This study demonstrates the potential for using modified membranes in an integrated filtration-adsorption process for removing pharmaceuticals from water streams.

Facile fabrication of three-dimensional hierarchical porous ZIF-L/gelatin aerogel: Highly efficient adsorbent with excellent recyclability towards antibiotics

Haihao Peng et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for antibiotics removal, but limited by poor recyclability. In this study, a three-dimensional hierarchical porous ZIF-L/foaming gelatin aerogels (ZIF-L/FGA200) was successfully prepared, showing high removal efficiency towards tetracycline. The ZIF-L/FGA200 also demonstrated excellent recyclability after multiple adsorption-desorption cycles.

In-situ immobilization of ZIF-67 on wood aerogel for effective removal of tetracycline from water

Guanyu Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite adsorbent material, ZIF-67@WA, was successfully fabricated by anchoring ZIF-67 rhombic dodecahedron on wood aerogel to improve the practical application of MOF materials in pollutant removal from wastewater. The composite showed excellent tetracycline adsorption capacity, comparable to previously reported adsorbents, and could be recycled multiple times with minimal secondary contamination. The study suggests that ZIF-67@WA has the potential to effectively remove tetracycline from water due to its superior adsorption performance, compressibility, light weight, and facile separation.

Tetracycline removal from aqueous solution using zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) with different pore size and topology: Adsorption isotherm, kinetic and mechanism studies

Jing Xia et al.

Summary: Three zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks, UiO-66, NU-1000, and MOF-525, demonstrated excellent adsorption performance for tetracycline removal. The adsorption kinetics were best described by the pseudo-second-order model, with equilibrium rapidly reached within 40 minutes on UiO-66 and NU-1000, and within 120 minutes on MOF-525. The Sips model provided the best fit for the adsorption isotherms, with high maximum Sips adsorption capacities reported for all three MOFs. The pi-pi interaction was found to play a crucial role in the adsorption process.

Adsorptive removal of pharmaceuticals from water using metal-organic frameworks: A review

Lijin Huang et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical pollution is a major concern, and regulating the concentration of pharmaceuticals in water is crucial for clean water provision. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising adsorbents for removing pharmaceutical contaminants due to their high surface area, controllable structure, and easy modification. Methods for preparing water-stable MOF-based materials and recent advancements in adsorptive removal of pharmaceutical pollutants using functional MOFs are discussed, along with potential interactions such as coordination, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic forces. Future research should focus on creating desirable MOFs and establishing structure-property relationships for improved capture performance.

Controlling the Structural Robustness of Zirconium-Based Metal Organic Frameworks for Efficient Adsorption on Tetracycline Antibiotics

Summary: The research found that the maximum adsorption capacities of UiO-66 and UIO-66-NH2 were 93.6 and 76.5 mg/g, respectively, with the TC adsorption capacity of UiO-66-NH2 being lower than that of UiO-66. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the -NH2 functional group could weaken the structural robustness of UiO-66-NH2, causing a reduction in TC adsorption capacity.
