New insights into eutrophication management: Importance of temperature and water residence time

Feng Zhao et al.

Summary: Eutrophication and harmful cyanobacterial blooms pose a threat to water resources worldwide. The debate continues regarding whether to control only phosphorus or both nitrogen and phosphorus in managing lake eutrophication. Factors such as N:P ratio, temperature, and water residence time can significantly impact nitrogen fixation.

Damming affects riverine macroinvertebrate metacommunity dynamics: Insights from taxonomic and functional beta diversity

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that both taxonomic and functional beta diversities of macroinvertebrates in a dammed river were higher than those in an undammed river, with the replacement component contributing most to the overall beta diversity. In the dry season, the taxonomic richness difference component was significantly higher in the dammed river, but no difference was found in the functional richness difference component.

Evaluation and variation trends analysis of water quality in response to water regime changes in a typical river-connected lake (Dongting Lake), China

Mingming Geng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the water quality trend of Dongting Lake in China from 1991 to 2018 using the Mann-Kendall test and self-organising map. The results indicated a deterioration in water quality, particularly after the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. The concentrations of TN and BOD5 increased significantly, and the water quality classification showed a higher ecological risk in Dongting Lake.

Periodically hydrologic alterations decouple the relationships between physicochemical variables and chlorophyll-a in a dam-induced urban lake

Tianyang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of periodically hydrologic alterations on physicochemical properties and chlorophyll-a in an urban dam-induced lake. The results show that chlorophyll-a can be predicted by dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, and dissolved silica in the dry season, and by flow velocity alone in the wet season. Additionally, changes in the composition of phytoplankton communities in the lake are influenced by chemical proportions.

Multivariate Statistical Analysis of Water Quality and Trophic State in an Artificial Dam Reservoir

Md Mamun et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the water quality of the Paldang Reservoir in South Korea, finding that it is influenced by nutrients and anthropogenic activities, leading to a eutrophic state. Results showed an increase in chemical oxygen demand (COD) since 1996, with total phosphorus (TP) being a better predictor of algal growth. Blue-green algae were found to dominate the algal community in the reservoir.

Linking water environmental factors and the local watershed landscape to the chlorophyll a concentration in reservoir bays

Nanxin Li et al.

Summary: The study found that Chl a concentration was higher in the storage period than in the discharge period. Two optimal PLS-SEMs explained 66.8% and 53.6% of the variation in Chl a concentration in the storage and discharge periods, respectively. The net effect of water chemistry on Chl a concentration was more pronounced during the discharge period, while the net effect of land-use composition was more significant during the storage period. The landscape pattern had significant indirect effects on Chl a concentration, especially during the discharge period.

Long-Term Interannual and Seasonal Links between the Nutrient Regime, Sestonic Chlorophyll and Dominant Bluegreen Algae under the Varying Intensity of Monsoon Precipitation in a Drinking Water Reservoir

Ji Yoon Kim et al.

Summary: Long-term variations in the water chemistry of Daecheong Reservoir in South Korea were influenced by monsoon rainfall, with increasing chemical oxygen demand and decreasing sestonic chlorophyll-a levels observed. Total phosphorus levels decreased steadily from the riverine zone to the lacustrine area, while total coliform bacteria levels were higher at certain sites. The presence of blue-green algae species indicated eutrophic conditions, while strong correlations were found between water temperature and chlorophyll-a, and between total suspended solids and total phosphorus. Overall water quality was rated as 'good' based on a multi-metric water pollution index.

Complex dynamics of water quality mixing in a warm mono-mictic reservoir

Roohollah Noori et al.

Summary: The cycling of water quality constituents in lakes is influenced by factors such as thermal stratification, homo-thermal conditions, oligotrophication, eutrophication, and microbial activities. Studies have shown incomplete mixing of constituents in reservoirs even during homo-thermal conditions, leading to a bottom-up regulated reservoir with impaired water quality. External pollution loads, internal cycling of pollutants from sediments, inflow reductions, and reservoir operations play a role in regulating vertical mixing and constituent concentrations in the Sabalan reservoir throughout the year.

Summary: The research found that there is a certain degree of pollution in the water and sediment of the Sabalan dam reservoir, especially in terms of arsenic contamination. Consuming water from a depth of 10 meters in the reservoir may be harmful to human health, with the carcinogenic risk of arsenic being approximately four times higher than that from the water surface.
