Alexandrium catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV) cyst germination, distribution, and toxicity in Jinhae-Masan Bay, Korea

Hyeon Ho Shin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the germination and distribution of ellipsoidal Alexandrium cysts in Jinhae-Masan Bay, Korea, revealing the phylogeny and morphological characteristics of A. catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV) strains. It was found that water temperature variation plays a key role in controlling the seasonal germination of these cysts, with differences observed in germination rates among sampling sites. Additionally, Gonyautoxins 3 and 4 (GTX-3 and GTX-4) were identified as major toxins produced by A. catenella and A. pacificum strains, with higher total cellular contents in A. catenella.

Development of an absolute quantification method for ribosomal RNA gene copy numbers per eukaryotic single cell by digital PCR

Kyoko Yarimizu et al.

Summary: The study successfully quantified the copy numbers of rRNA genes per single cell in 16 phytoplankton species using dPCR technology, utilizing a newly developed universal primer set. Chelex buffer was found suitable for DNA extraction to avoid underestimation of the gene copy numbers.
