Combined control of multiple extreme climate stressors on autumn vegetation phenology on the Tibetan Plateau under past and future climate change

Peng Li et al.

Summary: Existing research on autumn vegetation phenology mainly focuses on gradual climate change, while this study explores the responses of autumn phenology to extreme climate events across the Tibetan Plateau. The findings suggest that extreme climate stress events, such as drought, heat, wetness, and frost, have a significant impact on autumn vegetation phenology. Modeling shows that there may be earlier dormancy onset dates due to extreme climate events in the future.

Vegetation Phenology in the Qilian Mountains and Its Response to Temperature from 1982 to 2014

Cancan Qiao et al.

Summary: The study found that the phenology in the Qilian Mountains showed spatial and temporal heterogeneity, with the start of the growing season gradually delayed as altitude increased from southeast to northwest. Overall, there was an advanced trend in the annual average start of the growing season, a delayed trend in the end of the growing season, and an extended trend in the length of the growing season. Preseason temperatures were found to affect the start and end of the growing season, with the length of the growing season being positively correlated with annual mean temperature.

Autumn Phenology and Its Covariation with Climate, Spring Phenology and Annual Peak Growth on the Mongolian Plateau

Gang Bao et al.

Summary: Using NDVI and climate data, this study calculated the end of the growing season (EOS) on the Mongolian Plateau and found a slight but non-significant advancing trend during 1982-2013. Preseason air temperature and precipitation had varied effects on EOS depending on the climate conditions of different regions. High influences of the start of the growing season (SOS), annual peak growth (APG), and peak growth time (PGT) on EOS were identified, suggesting a strong carryover effect through seasonal plant cycles.

Spring phenology outweighed climate change in determining autumn phenology on the Tibetan Plateau

Jie Peng et al.

Summary: The study found a weakly delaying trend of autumn phenology (EOS) on the Tibetan Plateau, with spring phenology (SOS) playing a significant controlling role in the interannual variability of EOS. Temperature and precipitation had significant positive impacts on EOS, while radiation had a negative contribution.

Strong impacts of autumn phenology on grassland ecosystem water use efficiency on the Tibetan Plateau

Min Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that the delayed end of growing season (EOS) increased daily mean GPP but also increased ET in autumn, without enhancing WUE. The delay in EOS had a significant impact on daily GPP and ET in the steppe ecosystem across the Tibetan Plateau.

Incorporating water availability into autumn phenological model improved China's terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) simulation

Jie Peng et al.

Summary: The study developed a regional autumn phenological model (DMS) for China's terrestrial ecosystems, significantly improving the representation of EOS and predicting GPP with better performance. Incorporating phenological dates into ecosystem models could be helpful for productivity simulation and potentially lead to more accurate carbon cycle quantification.

Jiyan Wang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed plant phenology changes in the Three-River Headwaters Region using harmonic analysis and monitoring data. It explored the influence of climate and soil factors on phenology and found significant spatial variations in phenological patterns across different terrains and basins. The results highlighted the diverse impacts of climate and soil factors on plant phenology, indicating the complex relationship between environmental factors and plant growth trends.

The different impacts of the daytime and nighttime land surface temperatures on the alpine grassland phenology

Xiaoting Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the phenology of alpine grasslands in the Qinghai Lake Basin is significantly correlated with landform elevations. From 2001 to 2017, the start and end of the growing season in the Qinghai Lake Basin were advanced, resulting in an overall prolonged growing season length. Daytime and nighttime land surface temperatures have different effects on the start of the growing season, while increased temperatures in August have a similar advancing effect on the end of the growing season.
