Individual tree detection and crown delineation from Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) LiDAR in structurally complex mixed species eucalypt forests

D. Jaskierniak et al.

Summary: Estimation of forest stocking density per hectare is crucial for understanding forest dynamics post disturbances, and in this study, a novel bottom-up approach for individual tree and crown delineation (ITCD) using UAS LiDAR technology was developed and evaluated across 39 flight sites. The algorithm achieved a high mean F-score of 0.91 and accurately estimated the forest stocking density across the sites.

Mask R-CNN and OBIA Fusion Improves the Segmentation of Scattered Vegetation in Very High-Resolution Optical Sensors

Emilio Guirado et al.

Summary: The fusion of OBIA and Mask R-CNN for segmenting scattered vegetation in dryland ecosystems has been found to increase accuracy by up to 25% compared to using either method separately. Therefore, integrating OBIA and Mask R-CNN on high-resolution images leads to improved accuracy in vegetation mapping, enabling more precise and sensitive monitoring of changes in biodiversity and ecosystem services in drylands.

Neal C. Swayze et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of unmanned aerial system (UAS) imagery for modeling individual tree and stand-level metrics in dry conifer forests. It found that tree extraction accuracy was maximized for nadir crosshatch UAS flight designs, while extracted tree height accuracy was high for all UAS flight parameters. Additionally, stand density estimates were most accurate with off-nadir or crosshatch flight designs at lower altitudes.
