An analysis of multi-GNSS observations tracked by recent Android smartphones and smartphone-only relative positioning results

Jacek Paziewski et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the quality of multi-GNSS observations from recent Android smartphones, revealing significant differences in carrier-to-noise density ratio (C/N0) compared to geodetic receivers, as well as differences among constellations and frequencies. Higher satellite elevation leads to larger discrepancies in C/N0 between geodetic receivers and smartphones, suggesting a C/N0 weighting scheme may be more effective than the typical elevation dependent approach. Additionally, observations show noisier code pseudoranges and better code signals on L5 and E5a compared to L1 and E1, respectively.

Observation Quality Assessment and Performance of GNSS Standalone Positioning with Code Pseudoranges of Dual-Frequency Android Smartphones

Umberto Robustelli et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the positioning performance and GNSS observation quality of three recent smartphones (Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 9, and Huawei P30 Pro), suggesting the use of a C/N-0-dependent function for weighting the observations. It was found that smartphone code signals on L5 and E5a frequency bands have lower noise compared to E1 and L1 ones. Smartphone positioning with E5a code observations outperforms that with E1 signals, with Huawei P30 achieving the best positioning accuracy among the tested devices.

Improving DGNSS Performance through the Use of Network RTK Corrections

Duojie Weng et al.

Summary: Differential Global Navigation Satellite System (DGNSS) is a system widely used to enhance the accuracy of single-frequency receivers. Conventional DGNSS does not consider distance-dependent errors, but network RTK corrections can improve accuracy for longer baseline lengths. The study demonstrates that using network RTK corrections can significantly improve the accuracy of local-area DGNSS applications in low-latitude regions.

Practical applicability of processing static, short-observation-time raw GNSS measurements provided by a smartphone under tree vegetation

Julian Tomastik et al.

Summary: By analyzing 10-minute long static GNSS measurements under different conditions, the study confirmed the feasibility of achieving centimeter-level positioning accuracy under open-sky conditions, while vegetation significantly affects positioning performance. Carrier-phase and code-based solutions both have their advantages, but code-based measurements are more important for all smartphones with Android 7 or higher.

Summary: The study found that smartphones perform comparably in Differential Global Navigation Satellite System and Single Point Positioning, achieving around one meter accuracy in planimetric positioning but with better results in altimetric positioning with DGNSS. Introducing a statistical method to evaluate smartphone positioning accuracy and precision can improve the accuracy of mobile device positioning.

Conditioning and PPP processing of smartphone GNSS measurements in realistic environments

Ganga Shinghal et al.

Summary: Smartphones typically use duty-cycled Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 code measurements and Single Point Positioning (SPP) processing for position calculation. With the advancement of multi-constellation, dual-frequency GNSS chips in smartphones, Precise Point Positioning (PPP) can be utilized for improved positioning accuracy. However, in realistic environments, smartphones may face challenges such as data gaps and high multipath interference, which can be addressed through techniques like data prediction and improved processing algorithms for PPP.
