Biodiversity-productivity relationships in a natural grassland community vary under diversity loss scenarios

Qingmin Pan et al.

Summary: A plant functional group removal experiment on the Mongolian Plateau demonstrated that the form of the biodiversity-productivity relationship varies among different PFG loss patterns. The abundance of the remaining PFG(s) and compensation effect are major mechanisms affecting this relationship under diversity loss scenarios.

Spatial resolution, spectral metrics and biomass are key aspects in estimating plant species richness from spectral diversity in species-rich grasslands

Christian Rossi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between spectral diversity and plant species richness in alpine grassland ecosystems, finding that a fused dataset can meet the requirements of high spatial- and spectral resolution for remote biodiversity measurement. Contrary to previous research, a negative correlation was found between spectral metrics based on spectral complexity and plant species richness, with the calculation of spectral diversity being sensitive to live and dead plant biomass.

Mapping functional diversity using individual tree-based morphological and physiological traits in a subtropical forest

Zhaoju Zheng et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method to measure forest functional diversity (FD) by mapping functional traits of over one million trees in a subtropical forest in China using LiDAR and imaging spectroscopy data. The results show consistent relationships between morphological and physiological traits at individual tree level, with morphological richness following a hump-shaped pattern along elevation gradients and physiological richness decreasing at very high densities. Functional richness demonstrates a logarithmic relationship with increasing area or number of individual trees, indicating predominant local trait convergence in the study area.

Hyperspectral retrieval of leaf physiological traits and their links to ecosystem productivity in grassland monocultures

Yujin Zhao et al.

Summary: Plant functional traits are closely linked to ecological processes and ecosystem functions. Recent studies have shown that plant physiological traits can be accurately derived from hyperspectral images. The prediction accuracy of physiological traits based on area or mass metrics was compared using remote sensing approaches, with area-based traits showing higher accuracy. Canopy physiological traits were successfully mapped and related to ecosystem productivity using UAV-based spectrometry, providing insight into the relationship between functional traits and ecosystem functions.

Biodiversity facets affect community surface temperature via 3D canopy structure in grassland communities

Claudia Guimaraes-Steinicke et al.

Summary: Canopy structure plays a crucial role in the energy budget of grassland ecosystems and is influenced by plant diversity. Functional group composition (herbs vs. grass dominance) and to a lesser extent, plant diversity, drive the mean and variation of canopy surface temperature. These effects are mediated by metrics of canopy structure as well as direct effects unrelated to structural metrics.

Degradation stage effects on vegetation and soil properties interactions in alpine steppe

Cheng-yang Li et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in vegetation and soil properties at different degradation stages of alpine grasslands in the source region of the Yellow River. Soil bulk density was the main driver for changes in plant biomass and diversity at the intact to moderate degradation stages, while soil organic carbon and nitrate nitrogen content became the main drivers at severe and very severe degradation stages.

Summary: This study investigated the use of Riegl VUX-1 LiDAR system in estimating aboveground biomass in a grazing platform, and found that maximum canopy height and fractional vegetation coverage were the best predictors. Additionally, different flight altitudes had little effect on the derived vegetation parameters from LiDAR data.

The relationship between species and spectral diversity in grassland communities is mediated by their vertical complexity

Luisa Conti et al.

Summary: The study found a link between spectral signal diversity and taxonomic diversity at the community level in grasslands, with the influence of vegetation's vertical complexity. Plant height diversity was positively related to spectral diversity, but negatively linked to taxonomic diversity, and there was a significant negative interaction between plant height diversity and taxonomic diversity. This highlights the importance of considering communities' functional characteristics in understanding the relationship between spectral diversity and functional diversity.

The Potential of Mapping Grassland Plant Diversity with the Links among Spectral Diversity, Functional Trait Diversity, and Species Diversity

Yujin Zhao et al.

Summary: Mapping biodiversity in global terrestrial ecosystems is crucial for conservation and ecosystem services. Grassland plant diversity has been less studied compared to forest biodiversity mapping, but advances in UAV-based spectroscopy provide new ways to assess grassland plant diversity. This study found that different grassland plant species have unique functional traits, leading to diverse spectral patterns. As species richness increased, functional traits and spectral diversity also increased nonlinearly, eventually saturating. Hyperspectral data and cluster algorithms accurately predicted grassland plant species diversity, aiding in grassland biodiversity conservation and understanding ecosystem functions.
