Rapid flood inundation mapping by differencing water indices from pre- and post-flood Landsat images

Ramesh Sivanpillai et al.

Summary: Satellite images are valuable for generating flood inundation maps after flooding disasters. A rapid mapping method based on water index values is proposed to identify inundated areas. The inundation maps need to be overlaid on the post-flood satellite image for orientation.

Assessing water resources availability in headwater sub-catchments of Pungwe River Basin in a changing climate

Anesu D. Gumbo et al.

Summary: The study focused on the Pungwe River Basin, a transboundary river shared between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, where riparian communities are facing threats to their livelihoods due to climate change. Using the Pitman hydrological model, the study assessed the impact of changing climate on water resources availability in 10 selected headwater sub-catchments. Results showed varying effects on water availability based on short-term and long-term scenarios, with some sub-catchments predicting an increase in streamflow while others simulated a decrease, indicating the need for adaptive basin management strategies.

Deep Transfer Learning for Land Use and Land Cover Classification: A Comparative Study

Raoof Naushad et al.

Summary: The study implemented transfer learning to fine-tune VGG16 and WRNs networks for LULC classification using the EuroSAT dataset, achieving high accuracy while addressing the limited-data problem. Techniques such as early stopping, gradient clipping, adaptive learning rates, and data augmentation were used to optimize performance and computational time. The proposed approach based on WRNs outperformed previous methods in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy, achieving 99.17% accuracy.

Mapping Floods in Lowland Forest Using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 Data and an Object-Based Approach

Mateo Gasparovic et al.

Summary: The impact of floods on forests is immediate, so it is necessary to define flooded areas boundaries quickly. This research focused on flood mapping using geospatial data and remote sensing, showing that the developed methodological framework has high accuracy and speed of production.

Satellite-based flood mapping in the boreal region for improving situational awareness

Juval Cohen et al.

Summary: Space-borne remote sensing techniques have facilitated the real-time mapping of floods in a cost-efficient manner. In the case of the spring floods in northern Finland in 2018, the FC-FloDA algorithm proved to be the most successful in detecting floods. While the EMS product and the Sentinel-1 interpretation were effective in open areas, they did not perform well in detecting floods in forested areas.

Adaptable Convolutional Network for Hyperspectral Image Classification

Mercedes E. Paoletti et al.

Summary: In the current era, remote sensing instruments are generating massive data, with hyperspectral imaging data posing challenges due to its large spectral dimension. Convolutional neural networks are proposed as classification models, along with a novel adaptable convolution model to overcome limitations in filter design.

Modelling the Brumadinho tailings dam failure, the subsequent loss of life and how it could have been reduced

Darren Lumbroso et al.

Summary: The number of tailings dams failures has been increasing in recent years. Researchers used the LSM model to estimate the risk of the Brumadinho tailings dam failure and found that issuing a warning could potentially reduce the number of fatalities. Agent-based modeling tools like LSM can help improve emergency plans for tailings dams to mitigate risks in the future.
