Quality Control of Outsourced LiDAR Data Acquired with a UAV: A Case Study

Luisa Gomes Pereira et al.

Summary: In the past few decades, there has been a revolution in acquiring high resolution and accurate geo-information, with advances in photonics and LiDAR technology playing a key role. While the commercial use of LiDAR data acquired with UAV is increasing, there is still a need for more research on quality control in this area.

Preliminary Archeological Site Survey by UAV-Borne Lidar: A Case Study

Marco Balsi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a case study of using remote sensing with a LiDAR sensor carried by a UAV for detailed topographic survey at archaeological sites. Expert operators searched for prehistoric hypogea entrances in the high-resolution digital terrain model obtained from the ground-labeled point cloud. The study demonstrates the utility of this technique in revealing hidden anthropogenic structures and quickly documenting ground surface topography.

Accuracy Assessment of UAV-Photogrammetric-Derived Products Using PPK and GCPs in Challenging Terrains: In Search of Optimized Rockfall Mapping

Barbara Zabota et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of producing accurate photogrammetric products using Post-Processing Kinematic (PPK) without the need for ground control points and auxiliary data in the bundle block adjustment (BBA). Results showed that while the accuracy of BBA_PPK is inferior to BBA_traditional, it presents a viable solution for mapping dangerous and exposed areas.

Photogrammetry Using UAV-Mounted GNSS RTK: Georeferencing Strategies without GCPs

Martin Stroner et al.

Summary: This study examines systematic elevation errors in georeferencing UAV-acquired imagery without using ground control points (GCPs), and proposes strategies for eliminating this error. By conducting multiple flights at different altitudes and image acquisition axes, the research demonstrates a linear dependence between focal length deviation and systematic elevation error, and shows that a combination of two flights with different image acquisition axes can reduce the error to less than 0.03 meters. Overall, georeferencing without GCPs is a feasible alternative to traditional methods.

UAV-Based Remote Sensing Applications for Bridge Condition Assessment

Sainab Feroz et al.

Summary: The application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in bridge monitoring, in conjunction with remote sensing technologies, has been gaining momentum in recent years due to enhanced accessibility, cost efficiency, deterrence of traffic closure, and improved safety during inspection. This study conducted a comprehensive review of the integration of UAVs with remote sensing technologies, analyzing data acquisition methods such as visual imagery, infrared thermography, LiDAR, and other sensors. Sixty-five journal and conference papers published in the last two decades on NDT-based UAV systems were scrutinized, comparing stand-alone and integrated NDT-UAV methods, and discussing the facilitation of bridge inspection using UAVs in terms of ease of use, accuracy, cost-efficiency, data collection tools, and simulation platforms. Challenges and future perspectives of UAV-NDT technologies were also highlighted.

An Entropy-Weighting Method for Efficient Power-Line Feature Evaluation and Extraction from LiDAR Point Clouds

Junxiang Tan et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an algorithm using entropy-weighting feature evaluation method to improve the accuracy of automatic power line detection. By selecting important features and determining their weights through entropy weighting, the algorithm efficiently filters out power line points. Adaptive weight transformation in different pylon situations stabilizes the algorithm performance.

Evaluating the Performance of sUAS Photogrammetry with PPK Positioning for Infrastructure Mapping

Conor McMahon et al.

Summary: Traditional acquisition methods for generating digital surface models are either low resolution and slow, or expensive. Photogrammetric methods have received attention for their ability to quickly generate dense 3D models at low cost, but often require many manually measured control points or a permanent RTK/PPK reference station. This study used a small unmanned aerial system to investigate the impact of ground control point count and differential GNSS base station type on model accuracy, showing the best performance with five or more GCPs or when using a CORS.
